Seems to me a couple of bullets from a jet fighter could have deflated the balloon.
Agree. Should of been done when first spotted

It's almost humorous watching the crowd that long ago lost their TV remote, that would allow them to change channels - lose their collective minds over this. I would bet that we knew about the balloon long before it even went past Shemya and made the determination then, that since it posed no real threat nor could provide anything that Chinese satellites aren't already providing, it would be better to try and figure out a way to hack into the info being sent back to Beijing. While there's probably a 'self-destruct' mechanism to ensure that a controlled descent wouldn't give info to us anyway, shooting it down would guarantee that there would be no chance of gaining any intelligence from it whatsoever.

The concern over a "debris-field" is obviously a poor explanation of why it wasn't destroyed, but hey...it was worth a shot (pun intended). LOL

Given how big a deal China has made ahead of time on the now-cancelled visit by us, it also wouldn't surprise me to learn that Jinping was unaware of the balloon and is pretty pizzed about it. Just the fact that they have admitted it is theirs, is a huge departure from their normal MO. Don't be surprised, if some high ranking Chinese official/general, soon goes missing from future public appearances.

So for all that think the "sky/balloon is falling," relax...it really isn't.

Hopefully, we will get another El Nino that will send it over D.C. I can hear the Chinese now "Sorry to report sir, but there's nothing new to learn here."

I heard it through the grapevine that they are looking for a landing site in Biden's Delaware resident back yard. They are here by Hunter's invitation. He wants to show them his father's Corvette.

The military did not want it shot down. Probably so, as Ken D. suggested (above), that they could spy on it.

NORAD probably started tracking that device as soon as it was launched from China. Allowing it to fly over Alaska, Canada and the continental U.S. is perplexing. The geopolitical question is how our allies will respond to us.

It appears it was just down with a missile from an aircraft.

The Chinese spy balloon that’s been spotted over U.S. airspace in recent days has been shot down over the Carolina coastline, officials said.

An operation was underway to recover debris from the balloon in the Atlantic Ocean. A livestream of the balloon showed it deflated and falling toward the water below.

My daughter saw the balloon then heard a boom. She's in Myrtle Beach. The debris fell off to the ocean off the coast of Myrtle Beach.

Seems like a rather primitive way to gather intelligence on the part of China. Once launched those things go where the wind decides they should. I'm pretty sure China has a lot more reliable means of gathering data than with random balloons.
I believe that i heard on TV that they could be steered ......somehow?
