Before the square was built, the building was a church? Do you remember anything else about the site?

Why would the Developer go away from the Commercial properties? That's his revenue stream. Do you know of any other Developer that turns commercial properties over to your "Tyranny of the Minority"

The building was not built to be a church. It was designed, along with the rest of the buildings in Spanish Springs, to create the impression of an old Spanish settlement which always had a "Church on the Square". While it hosted religious services by a various groups, it also functioned as a concert hall and meeting place, among other things. This was never a consecrated church.

The crucifix is an architectural adornment. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Neither of the "phrases" that you mention were on the money nor in the pledge until 1954 and 56 respectively.

Bingo. That was no more a church than the lighthouse at LSL is a signal to mariners. In anticipation to certain responses, I was baptized in a creek and married on a beach....neither event made those venues churches.

You have to be kidding. I have friends who swear they get home at night thanks to that lighthouse beacon.

"Question: "What is the church?"
Answer: Many people today understand the church as a building. This is not a biblical understanding of the church. The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which is defined as “an assembly” or “called-out ones.

The root meaning of “church” is not that of a building, but of people. It is ironic that when you ask people what church they attend, they usually identify a building. Romans 16:5 says “… greet the church that is in their house.” Paul refers to the church in their house—not a church building, but a body of believers.

The church is the body of Christ, of which He is the head. Ephesians 1:22-23 says, “And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” The body of Christ is made up of all believers in Jesus Christ from the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2) until Christ’s return. The body of Christ is comprised of two aspects:

When we first moved here in 2000, I went with my neighbors & attended worship services every Sunday for about 2 years at the Church on the Square. It was non-denominational and they would have guest pastors, ministers, etc come in to do the service every Sunday and there were wonderful singers each week.
Also my youngest daughter got married there in April of 2008.
