Folks that seem as though they have a problem tipping for reasonable services should stay home and not take up tables for folks who know how to treat people that are servicing them.

gerryann - and how do you feel about paying the obligatory 20% included tip when the service is way less than "reasonable"?

I will give 20% as long as the server and manager are aware of specific problems with the service...not the food....the service. The best solution (if I didn't like the service) is to just not go back.

I've seen postings regarding low tips because of bad food (in the posters opinion). Wait staff does not cook the food, but should be told of unsatisfactory food and still given their 20%.

Cool

Geezz.... It isn't a tip any longer. It's a labor subsidy for the restaurant, so they don't have to pay their employees a decent wage.

...and it has nothing to do with me being cheap. I do tip, but I just can't understand how the restaurant industry can get away with this, when other industries can't.

OK....let the flaming to begin

They should pay the waitstaff enough that tipping is not the norm. I'm with Memason.

But remenber, waiters don't want a regular wage!? "Hey, waiter, want $12//hour fixed wage?" "Hell, no!" Why? Because they make a fortune on tips (one of my family members is a waitress at a steak house and walks out with $200 each night in cash on any weekend with tips alone--sloooow weekdays it's more like $75--often untaxed---not bad for four hours work not even including their measly $5/hour salary).

The restaurant theater wants to sell dessert, they ought not have everyone guessing about tips. Tip included, tip included (even if someone gets a piece of cake--is that really the same a serving a whole meal and deserving a tip? If I order at Corner Bakery and the wait staff brings a slice of pie to my table, I should tip them?)

Tipping 20% automatically (on the bill) at a buffet is ludicrous.

Who in the heck is blaming you? You didn't get the dessert, you didn't get the extra drinks. You stated what happened at your table and folks commented about it. No one said a thing about YOU being cheap. Don't wear the shoe if it doesn't fit.

Default tip

Go back to page one posting where I'm told "don't be so cheap"-if the poster means the other people at the table and not me,he should have made that clear-if I'm wrong I apologize but this is getting way out of hand.I was just reporting some people's point of view.I'm out of here.

"I see their point but the staff worked hard and the tip was a small amount so it wouldn't have bothered me.But it sure did bother them. "

Well, you did say "I see their point" but then contradicted yourself. I think that is where the confusion is...
