I am considering what type of window treatments to purchase for our home. I know some provide more energy efficiency than others, but my preference is to be able to have blinds or shutters to be able to adjust the light in addition to providing privacy. Can anyone tell me if the windows in the new homes are very energy efficient? I'm sure they are not the best LowE windows, but assume much better than single pane windows. Are you able to leave your widow treatments open during the day and stay comfortable during the summer? Thanks for your help.

Double Pane Only- U-Factor 0.59, Solar heat gain 0.32.We went with shutters, you can control the light and it does help with the basic windows

Why would you not get LOW-E windows...they are definintely of value in most of Florida especially if you have direct sunlight any time of the day. Low E not only prevents heat gain but allow less ultra vilovet light in thus preventing alot of fading of your color fabrics or rugs.

Regarding the OPs questions about leaving the window treatments open....If on your western side, you have direct sun in the summer, it will be bright and hot even with low E Windows. Some sort of blind or window treatment will be required ...and this requirement would exist for about 4-5 months Mid April to mid-Sept.

2old and Jimbo. Are you (did you) switch out your windows? Low-E are included in my build. I am also getting shutters though to control the light (sun).

Not sure if I was clear. I have had very energy efficient windows in the past that allowed us to keep our blinds completely open even on the west facing side of our house. They were filled with argon and were slightly tinted. I realize TV installs less efficient windows and wondered if they were sufficient to allow blinds and/or shutters alone and still be comfortable with them open at last most of the time. If I can't open them, I may as well get less expensive cellular blinds.

No the standard windows are fine if you see the building specs filed they R not the best but pretty good.

The heat gain thru glass is more critical as to solar orientation I think than the product in Fl.

I'll be in wood shop building plantation shutters for most windows, it just a Florida thing for us.

Regular blinds R out of place IMO.

Those that R building should get a complete set of plans for your home if you want get into the details, they are 9 pages, plus all the building dept approvals energy codes all that boring stuff , specs on every truss, window, door, electric outlets, elevations and HVAC.

I'm sure you can upgrade, but look at the ROI on that investment.

Tinting may be a better item to look into, there is controversy of the warrantee I read here, but disagree that it's an issue with 3M tinting products, it's only your west than your southern exposures that will be an issue with heat and North & east with heat.

Solar Guys and Huper Optik, Nanoceramic window film is the best.
