Default Be cautious of what you post

Apparently you can't trust some people on TOV. From here on in I will change my name and privacy settings.
I posted yesterday asking if anyone had info on a company we are dealing with as we have been unable to get them to return calls for 6 weeks or more. I received 1 PM from a name I won't mention. I messaged him back "privately". Or so I thought. Well much to my surprise we finally heard from the company today and only because of this post. The person who sent the pm went directly to the company. They actually emailed a copy of my post. So angry and not sure if this person is actually a troll. I will discuss with the moderator to figure it out. Right now just feel so deceived TOV has been so helpful in the past

You should be careful with Private Messages anywhere on the Internet as you are never sure with whom you are talking.

TOTV is pretty good with security and the like.

Be very careful with your e-mail address and whom you give it to as I shared my e-mails with someone who was also cyberstalking me as well as cyberbullying me for about five years. (2001-2006) He used many different aliases on Findlaw but pretended to be a friend.

I have had few problems the nine years or so I have been of TOTV. Document stuff if you do have a problem of any kind by printing off any suspicious e-mails and keeping them in a safe place. You might also want to copy in trusted friends.

I may be interpreting your post incorrectly, but it sounds like an acquaintance of the offending company saw the posting, put 2&2 together and possibly tried to "help", however, I try to see the good in people. You may be completely correct, and if so, I hope you get to the bottom of this. I know there are some things like landscaping companies that have great reviews posted that are actually by the landscaper. I tend to look at the posters, and their profile if I think there is anything strange going on. I have gone so far as to block certain posters because of past posts or practices.

In general, I have found most posters to generally be helpful and genuinely concerned, and there are of course those that are highly opinionated. I think I provided the name of a excellent vendor for your problem. Hope this helps.

I agree 100%, I bet the intent was to help. As for far swininging Internet Opinions, rarely do they bleed into life outside the keyboard.

I'm with the tinker on this one. It really does sound like someone was trying to be helpful. Rather than being angry, I think I'd be publicly thanking the individual who forwarded my post to the vendor. It got the vendor to contact and, hopefully, you will now get the result you wanted. If the vendor was angry about your post, that's the vendor's problem. Not yours nor the messenger's.

I looked at the thread in question and my guess too is that the person was trying to be helpful and not trolling. I have found few trolls on TOTV except when they think they are anonymous on the Political Forum.

Usually it is when the message board offers anonymity that people become their nastiest. Check Topix Talk of the Villages Thread for a contrast.

That becomes a problem if the vendor or business knows nothing about Talk of the Villages. Many do not seem familiar with TOTV.

I had a cyberstalker/cyberbully on Findlaw's message boards from 2001 - 2006 and one of his tricks was to e-mail people I mentioned on Findlaw while at the same time begging for my law librarianship help with his Dr. Jekyl personality while making my virtual life a nightmare with his many anonymous Dr. Hydes.

Topix still has a very serious problem of bullying of one of our most illustrious members by someone who is anonymous even if it should not be hard to figure out who this person is. It is a situation where virtual life and real life inter connect. The Topix person was kicked off of TOTV but still posts on Topix.

He has taken virtual shots at me too but they are few and far between. And I seldom bother to read Topic the Villages.

Possibly they had a contact in the company. Anything wrong with that, as long as you were not threatened. Nothing wrong with the company in question hearing of the complaints.
