Try Discount.Filters.Com for unusual sized filters. They are reasonably priced and ship quickly.

They are using 4" media filters - these are good filters and are a big improvement over the older style 1" filters. They cost more but last much longer - typically a year. Local stores don't carry them because most homes don't have them - most likely not worth the shelf space for a low demand product. I have been mail ordering 4" media filters for 10 years and will probably still be mail ordering them 10 years from now.

If you read the OP you'll see that the local HD now has the larger size filter needed by the majority of us who built from 2010 on. That was his point of placing the post - to let us know that we can NOW get them local instead of just online.

I went online and use Shorty'a for filters. Better price than Discount Filters. Had to call them to verify a size, helpful. Filters, I use Carrier, are not generic, but branded manufacturers product.

I don't know where the Carrier filter enclosures are made or why they chose such an odd ball size. If it took 19.5"x19.5"x3.75", the cost for third party filters would be about 1/2. The HVAC contractor could have selected a non-Carrier filter enclosure that would have been less expensive and took "standard" size 4" media filters. I am not sure how any of this saves the builder any money. If anything, it put more potential money in the pocket of the HVAC contractor since they can supply a higher cost filter with perhaps more margin. Basicly we have to pay about $30 instead of $15 but we do wind up with a very sharp looking Carrier-branded filter enclosure ;-)

Saves builder bucks but end users pay thru the nose for replacement filters for years.

Many posters do not go back and read the entire thread before posting. I made that error once and caught holy hell for my subsequent redundant post.

I think they were 28.00 each. If you have a military discount it's 10 % less. When I bought my home the builders superintendent and Sun Cool both told me I must use the exact size filter to properly filter the air.

Lot of difference in filters now...looks like the size is a good match but I did not see the original equipment replacement filters on the Home Depot website, good luck..

At On Time Air Filters, we recommend Merv 8 filters as our "better" filter" and Merv 11 filters as our "best filter." For people with pets or otherwise desiring superior odor management, we offer a "best for pets" in some sizes. This is a carbon activated Merv 8 filter. We do not recommend Merv 13 filters, because these filters may negatively affect certain HVAC systems.

I went through this whole odd sized filter nightmare 2 months ago, I agree with above Filters USA was the way to go. If you carefully check the typical local filters, you will find they are a little too big or a little too small on at least one of the dimensions. I did not want to take any chances. Also, filtersUSA provided with a 10% off coupon on my next order.
