We have a deposit down on a lot in Pennecamp that backs to the Miona Lake Golf Course. We love the old live oak trees with the moss hanging down.

The course looks like it's been there for a long time. Is it a safe bet that they will be around for many years to come? Is it a solid, profitable course? Has anyone joined or played there?

I know there can never be any guarantee that they will always be there but I hate to think of what would happen to that pristine view, not to mention our property value, if they ever went belly up or sold it for development.

if i were buying there i would not count on the golf course being there for too long, not that i have any info that says they are leaving but i would be thinking about the worst case scenario if i were buying, there are many lots available there now...gn

OK, since we don't really know what we are talking about, lets speculate.

The Miona Lakes golf course is beautiful...but only from real far away. Underneath those gorgeous oaks is a very poor course design, not well maintained, which can't be altered enough to make it a good course because of the homes which almost entirely surround it. I suppose someone could turn the course into building lots but I can't see new homes being a desired blend with the existing hodgepodge of structures. And if someone were crazy enough to try it. I can't see them being crazy enough to cut down the trees.

So, my wild guess is that when you look out your Pennecamp windows in 2110, your view will be the same as it is today.

I cannot answer the questions about longevity, but I have played it a few times ?2? years ago. I played the back tees those days and memory says the course is "ok". Not great conditioned, but greens were not bad then. I remember the draw for us was we had two guests here and saw an ad for 18 holes with cart, lunch and a soda for $25 in paper. They pay $50 each here even as priority guests

If you see that ad in paper, IMO it is well worth the trip to find out for your self....

I personally do not like the course. It is not in good shape. Some of the fairways are too close to each other and there is a risk of being hit with a golf ball. That being said, the course always seems to be very busy.

If you see that ad in paper, IMO it is well worth the trip to find out for your self....

Read the fine print (I didn't). The deal was for a free hot dog/soda after the round. When I tried to get my weiner and coke I got..."that expires at noon".... sure enough it was there in the fine print. So, the whole 18 holes I was duffing it but kept telling my partners..."hey, at least we get a free hot dog at the end"... I'm still taking flack for that!

Well two years ago we got the full treatment .

I enjoyed the post, especially about the flack, golfing pals have a good memory about that stuff

I played it about two months ago and found it in the best shape it has been in at least ten years. The greens were in very good shape. The fairways were good also. The problem with Miona is they have a hard tme growing grass under those big oak trees so the rough is pretty sandy.

I play with a group at Silver Springs Shores, one of the best courses around this year. (except greens are very fast and undulating) The owners of Silver Springs and Miona are in a Conglomerate that also owns Lakes Side in Inverness and Citrus Hills or Springs in Hernado area. Several members of my group have taken out a membership that covers the four courses. They tell me that Miona is still in the best shape it's been in in years.

pjohn, thanks for the input, i agree with you, i have played there this year and the course is in the best shape it's been in for many years, and with the total refirb on the pro shop and grill, kudos to the owners. i was hoping to get input from the negative posters to see when they last were there...gn

My comment wasn't negative.... except I got hosed out of my hot dog and coke. I enjoyed the course.

I played there a couple of weeks ago, on a cold, windy day. In my opinion the course condition is equal to most of the courses here in TV. It was better than Orange Blossom and Havana, but not on a par with Lopez. I can't compare it to Palmer, because I refuse to pay the Palmer rates.

I have been playing the course since 1979 and yes it has had ups and downs but the past year and half it has been the best I have seen. If it is so bad why is it that about half the players on any given day are from the Villages. I know we have many members from the Villages. As far as it closing and cutting all the oaks, I doubt it, but I never thought the Villages would a couple hundred mature oaks in my back yard, but they did, and now that is where the "BIG" is being built.
