Many of the lessons learned by them in TV should translate to a better understanding of the safe operation of a car when that time comes. That is my plan subject to change by their mother.
In reading through this thread, your approach is similar to the way I handled our four grandchildren when they came to TV and wanted to drive our golf cart. All but the youngest (14) have cars now and are good drivers.

I will say this----all kids are not the same and to put them all in the "same box" is just as wrong as saying you MUST have a drivers license to drive a golf cart. Careful what you wish for! The Government is already involved in more "things" than our founding fathers ever imagined and in many cases our freedom to make decisions for ourselves has become less and less.

"Government exists to protect us from each other, where Government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves". Ronald Reagan

I kinda think that is beside the point, which many have supported on this thread with very sage advice.

Be safe, drive defensively, if you read this, most of us hope you will not let kids of ANY age that are unused to the area drive without your personal presence. There is a reason some folks are older than others.

Totally understand the point of the post. However, I see WAY too many posts on this board where people are either bragging about suing someone and taking their house and all their money, or they're terrified of being sued and losing everything they have. People should educate themselves on the laws of the state before making such proclamations and giving bad advice.

You are probably right, but I can't recall too many. Most folks on this board make fun of the lawyer commercials. I would have to guess that most of us have never sued or been sued and no use starting now.

It's usually in the golf cart insurance threads. "Never let a friend drive your cart! You could lose everything you have!"
That statement is patently false and nothing more than fear mongering.

Your posts are very interesting.
Do you have a legal background?
Of course posters are concerned about harm being caused to other people as well as financial issues.

Why in the world would anyone let a child operate a motor vehicle in car and truck traffic here, when they are not allowed to do it where they live, and without a driver's license???

And regarding "putting them all in the same box", that is exactly what is accepted throughout the nation with regard to training and testing for a drivers' license. Everyone must wait till age 16 (or maybe less in farm areas).

To me, the only reason to allow a minor without a drivers' license to drive a golf cart here is because you are trying to be their playmate, not their parent or grandparent.

And if you're going to quote Reagan about sense of duty to protect others, you might quote him saying that his being a lifeguard had a profound impact on his future goals, to rescue and protect others.

Surely he would not have allowed kids OR adults to be in water over the heads without knowing how to swim reliably.

"Edmund Morris, Official Biographer: The poignant thing about the Rock River is that in his dotage, after he left the White House, when he began to lose his mind, the one thing he would still want to talk about was his days as a lifeguard on the Rock River. He had a picture in his office of the spot where he used to stand as a boy. And he would say, "you see, that's where I used to be a lifeguard. I saved 77 lives there." His subsequent career, his subsequent political career at any rate, was devoted to the general theme of rescue...."

If it concerns anyone on TOTV that much, for $150-350 per year, get personal umbrella insurance, you'll sleep better

No, I educated myself upon moving here. If posters are so concerned, they should check with a financial planner or attorney as soon as they move here! I can't imagine moving somewhere and living there for years without becoming informed on how to protect your assets. Baffling to me.

Please educate us on personal umbrella insurance.
Is that something you would add to a home insurance policy or specifically on a golf cart insurance policy?

An umbrella policy covers almost all personal liability (except for illegal and intentional acts) You must have certain underlying insurance such as auto, homeowners, watercraft, RV and business if applicable. Any liability judgment beyond the limits of the underlying coverage is covered by the umbrella. I just converted mine from NY to FL, and it is very reasonable, PM me if you want to know rate from TV insurance for what coverage. And, no, it DOES NOT cover failure to buy me lobster

I have a guardian angel and I am pretty sure she drinks. She was fine until we moved here. A lot of people who live here and know the layout have enough trouble driving here. Young, YOUNG, visitors almost always need a guide.

To days bumpers are designed to buckle and give at 5 miles, imagine the damage one will sustain at 20 miles an hour, now let your grand children drive while praying that nothing ever happens. If he does no sorry will ever bring them back to one piece.

I wonder what qualifies as my "retirement"? My social security? My profit from investments? I have financial resources I count on and would not want to lose, and I don't think they would come under the "retirement" umbrella. Not everyone has a pension.
