Upon age 14, I will be delighted to instruct my two grandsons on the safe operation of a golf cart in the Villages. Under my supervision, they will learn that safety comes first and to drive defensively (observe your surroundings and be prepared). Before they are allowed to drive alone, they must prove to me their competence. And, they will be restricted to the areas south of 466A until they gain some experience.

Many of the lessons learned by them in TV should translate to a better understanding of the safe operation of a car when that time comes. That is my plan subject to change by their mother.

Maybe regarding 14 year olds driving carts, however, it was a broad brush statement.

There are a lot of problems with golf carts. Yes and driving under 14 is one of them. It's the Law don't let them do it. Other problems that I see daily.. This year i have witnessed 3 dogs killed because the owners evidently just don't care. They are tied up to the side rail on the cart and Lo and Behold the animal sees something and bolts out of the cart and gets run over by the rear wheels! Folks we have spent a lifetime learning what to do and what not to do! Why Why do folks decide that when we retire we can do what we want and common sense will not apply anymore? The skinny is.. No kids driving under 14.. Keeps your pets contained. Please put your children in a car seat. Yes even in a golf cart! And Please Please obey the traffic rules. Stop means Stop! It's not a suggestion! We Have lived a great life to retire here.. Why in the world would we do anything to jeopardize our lifestyle, our pets and most of all our families? Let's have a great retirement and remember.. Even if you don't like the rules.. They're still rules..

The vast majority of us are responsible cart drivers. My eldest granddaughters must have their drivers licenses and I must be with them at all times. I value them too much to let them loose on the roads in TV without supervision immediately available.

We can say we will teach our youngsters everything about safety and driving a golf cart, but they are still 14, and there is a level of maturity commensurate with the age. My hope is no one would send their 14-year-old grandkid(s) out alone in their carts. We've seen even older grandkids get caught up in the moment and drive irresponsibly.

I'm not as worried about my grandkids when I am with them, as I am about some of our more immature residents here in TV

I agree with you, but I still think it's naive to think just because you taught safety to a 14-year-old they will not go off and do something silly out of your sight. Not only are they still only 14, they think they're immortal.

Good for you! Unfortunately many grandparents can't resist their young grandkids begging to take the cart for a spin.
I agree that anyone driving a golfcart should have a driver's license. As has often been said, golf carts aren't toys.

I recently saw a 4-seater golf cart being driven on the trail near the Mulberry dog park by a boy maybe 7 or 8. Grandpa was next to him, and there were two much younger kids in the back seats without seat belts. There were many people out walking the trail. To grandpa's credit, he made the boy pull over so I could get around safely, but this kid was weaving back and forth like it was a ride at Disney. The possibilities for catastrophe were endless. When did amusing young kids include putting their lives, and the lives of others, in danger?
