I have been here for 10 years...although I didn't bring much I have accumulated lots...I was wondering if it's worth the time and effort to have a yard sale or should I donate it...never had one and I've never been to one...need advice

If you have a few valuable and useful items, sell them on the TOTV classifieds. They will sell fast. Donate the rest.

This is great advice. We had one before we moved here. If you are lucky, you will get about 10% of what you paid for the items. We sold about a third of the items and put the rest out by the curb. Quite a few people stopped by after the sale ended and took some of the free items but a lot were picked up for trash.

I refuse to have garage or yard sales. As I seriously start to declutter (and there's is lots to get rid of) the absolute last thing I want to do to is haggle with someone who is asking if I'll take a quarter for something.

If I owned, used it and got everything I wanted out of something, I'd rather give it away to someone who really needs it. I have found 2 good sources to just give away stuff. There is a FB page called Buy Nothing The Villages, Florida, people post pictures or descriptions of the stuff they want gone and people resound with interest via Messenger. My 2nd go-to is freecycle.org.

Also for $10, you can request a bulk pickup that is billed directly to your monthly amenities bill. Good Luck.

Friend of ours in Va had one and one item for sale was laptop with power cord.

Wanted $ 30 for it.

someone calls him over and says no power cord will give you $ 5 for it. Most likely the cord is now in his pocket.

Came to the conclusion much easier to donate stuff to people in need.

Had a garage/yard sale once. Personal opinion, do not waste your time. Only items we sold easily were good condtioned/name brand golf clubs and childrens clothes. At that time we did not live in TV. Highly suspect that there is very little demand for childrens clothes in TV.

Also, very few people interested in furniture. Suspect that transportation costs and/or energy to do it make them un marketable.

We made $150. and spent 30 hours doing this. On the plus side $150 was tax free. $100.00 was on the golf clubs. Small items such as household products did not sell.

unless you can pool your stuff with a larger (neighborhood) sale it is not worth it. Expect to get a few pennies on the dollar for your stuff.

Anything you can sell here in classifieds is a better use of your time.

Down here in Marsh Bend, we had two: the 1st one was the first one I ever had. Joined a few neighbors to conduct one. Even better was that another neighbor organized it, and even took care of selling my stuff. We raised over $1,000 and donated the proceeds to the local middle/high school track team, and got an actual receipt for tax purposes.

Repeated with a 2nd one a few months ago with 15 other neighbors, and all did very well. What I didn't sell of my own stuff, I donated to Goodwill.

A a neighborhood group we were all quite satisfied with the results.

I had a nice Thomasville Bunk bed set that didn't get any interest at that 2nd sale, but did sell afterwards using a next door sale listing.

I agree with most here. NO. People will offer you a nickel for something that you're asking a dime.
If you have the knowledge advertise anything you think you can get 20 bucks for on Facebook marketplace, Nextdoor or TOTV classifieds and donate the rest.
One tip is that when we moved we had all our cheaper "stuff" in the garage and told people that came over to check it out. "5 bucks for anything else you like". You'd be surprised the stuff people will take when they're already there.

If you're new to the neighborhood, or have new neighbors, and you want to have a yard sale, then I think that it's worth the time and effort. Yeah, you do get those who want stuff for next to nothing, but it's easier just to say no to them. If you have a yard sale to make a lot of money, then you'll be disappointed. My advice is to price the items to sell them....get rid of them. It's a pita to bring back in all the stuff that didn't sell. Sell it cheap, sell it fast, meet new neighbors, and learn things while you're at it. Have a party...put on some music, get comfortable, and when the garage sale is over, pour yourself a glass of wine.

we had 'yard sales' when both my parents and later my in-laws passed to get rid of what no one wanted

after doing it twice I wouldn't bother again...it's a lot of time for short money...but if you're looking for something to do, give it a try

you'll meet a lot of people and you'll have a few interesting conversations...the dealers and resellers come early to pick over 'the good stuff'...then the bargain hunters come that are truly looking for something....last are the folks that have nothing better to do and are just out for a ride....it does get crazy when there's a lot of people, so have a couple of friends helping you and have someone assigned to the cash box....you'll need to go to the bank and get a couple rolls of quarters and a stack of 'ones'....as people will try to give you a $20 bill for something you marked at 75 cents....price the stuff to sell, remember no one in the family wanted it
