Default House Key Duplication

Took our house key to Home Depot and Ace Hardware to have duplicates made. After several trips to both places we still have not been able to get keys that work. Figure having a locksmith come to our home might be rather expensive. Any suggestions out there.

If you are a new home, it might be a home warranty issue and cost you nothing. If not try calling a locksmith to get an estimate. Your Village Locksmith (352) 750-6611 is one I have heard is good.

I hate to say it but I have had several house keys made at Ace on 466 and never had a problem.

I had a similar problem, the 2 kwikset keys worked perfectly, the schlage made at the same time by the same guys did not work. When I went back, another guy said yep, the schlage locks are finicky he made another key and it worked fine. This was at the ACE hardware in Wildwood. Very happy with their work.

My house key is for five doors. I gave up on duplicates here and use a shoe repair store that makes keys. Unfortunately, it is 1200 miles from here so hard to recommend. I will try a couple of the posted businesses that I haven't tried before. Thanks.

Had the same thing happen to me. What I did was to squirt a small amount of WD-40 into the lockset. The Florida weather has a way to make the locks stick just enough that it may be hard to have the keys work. Give it a shot and see if it works. That is a routine maintenance thing I do once a year.

Our lock is "sloppy" and duplicates do not work well. It is a Kwikset lot. We rarely use the front door and on the garage I installed a keypad lock which is fantastic!!!

I have had at least 9 keys made at home depot and they all worked. If your home is new call the home warrenty and have the company who put the hardware on your door take a look at it.

We had the deadbolt removed from the front door and moved it to the garage entrance....then had the front door replaced with a keyed deadbolt. Had a locksmith do the work......which is not relevant to the OP except that all keys and locks were adjusted by a locksmith, on site so no issues.

We had the same problem with our new house. Eleven keys later, Warranty came out and had to change the locks, the deadbolt was bad, even the keys that came with the lock didn't work well.

I was wondering about the locks on the homes in TV. When my agent was taking us around to show us homes, she used a Master Key to open all the doors. So I'm guessing that Master Key still fits all of our homes even after we purchase the house? Do any of you change your locks after you buy the house? It's a bit disconcerting knowing that a Master key is out there and accessible to so many different people. Just a thought?

They can't duplicate keys down here as good as they do "up north".
