Default How much of your winter clothing did you leave behind?

I'm thinking of leaving almost all of my coats in Michigan...give them to my daughter. Would there ever be opportunity to wear a long wool coat? I realize that it can get chilly there but I don't want to bring anything with me when I move there that I wouldn't use. (see, house and business aren't even remotely close to being sold but you can tell where my mind is!!)

I brought way to many winter clothes and coats and sweaters, etc. Hubby about stroked when I insisted on bringing my new rain boots (proved him wrong on that one). I wished I had asked the question you are asking. I sure don't need two leather coats and 2 very warm cloth ones. I would say ONE transitional coat and one winter one would be more then enough. Oh heck, just wear a sweater under the transitional one...that would work.

One thing to remember is you might not need them here, but you could go visit somewhere that's cold in the winter. You may not need all you have, but don't assume you won't ever need a heavy coat again.

When we lived in CA we visited our son and his family in Chicago. It was 12 degrees when we arrived. Glad I had a heavy, warm coat and gloves, scarf, etc. Kids moved to Florida before we did and I still kept the heavy clothes. Now, after living for a number of years in Florida, the kids are back in Chicago and I'm sure we'll be heading for a visit when the weather is considerably less warm than here. I still have family in New England, also, so I've kept the heavy coat, gloves, scarf, etc.

AW shucks Trish. I got excited for you when I saw your post.

I thought you sold your house and business and was moving to TV.

Wishful thinking.

You may want to bring a handful down. Maybe a lighter coat or jacket and a few sweaters and some long pants. I got rid of ALOT of mine and regretted it as some winter days and evenings can get quite chilly here. I also am thinking we could use a heavier blanket for our bed at night though not an electric one!! The houses here aren't insulated like they were up north and when we get some of those north winds I feel it!

Pooh makes a good point about keeping at least one heavy coat in case of travel to colder areas in the winter.

Other than that, most people are fine with a lightweight coat/jacket and some sweaters or things to layer with.

Leave your mink coat behind LOL

I've been here 2 1/2 years now, so 2 winters. I have lots of winter clothing that have hung unmoved in my closet and untouched (kind of like my suits which I don't know why I brought more than 1 black one)

Here I might wear a sweatshirt or sweater when I get chilly, and then maybe throw a windbreaker over that when in the golfcart. That's about it.

Richie, you don't need heavy clothing because you have the Blonde Girl to keep you warm!

I've been here 2 years. Last winter was colder than usual. It costs more here to heat the house in winter than to cool it in summer. So I use my whole collection of light cashmere sweaters and fleece jackets, and a warm coat, hat, gloves and scarves when I visit family in NY. What I don't use are the bulky heavy sweaters that I brought along. A lined raincoat is a good thing to have. When you go out in the evening you are always going to need a jacket or light coat.

I have found after being here a while my definition of "cold" has changed. When I lived in WI temps in the 50s didn't seem cold. Now when it is that cold I act and dress like it's freezing outside
