The problem with the numbers of deaths are dying from COVID-19 OR with COVID-19. That means if you die in an auto accident and happen to be COVID-19 positive, then your death counts as a COVID-19 death, even though the cause of the death was the auto accident.

There was a study done in the US and Israel. Of the people who die from COVID-19, 80% have a low vitamin D level in their bodies. It was found that is your vitamin D level is 50 in your body, then the odds are reduced by more than 50% from being hospitalized with COVID-19.

The doctor interviewed said that he prescribes 3,000 to 5,000 international units of vitamin D3, 50 milligrams of chelated zinc, and Vitamin C, to be taken daily to reduce the COVID-19 risk. I don’t know the vitamin C dosage.

This is a simple and inexpensive thing that can be done to reduce the COVID-19 risk. That US / Israel study doesn’t seem to be widely reported on the news. So, people could reduce their risk of COVID-19 if they started taking those inexpensive supplements, if they knew that information. Everyone I’ve told about that study, didn’t hear about it, and weren’t taking those supplements.

It's in our neighborhood now. Several have had it and recovered. Symptoms varied from mild to severe, some still with after effects. Three are in the hospital this week, one in ICU. Another younger neighbor who is a snowbird, played softball and generally very active is in hospice treatment now with COVID.

The Sumter County Health Department Issues advisory on rising COVID-19 cases

All residents are urged to make efforts to prevent infection

Bushnell, FLA — The purpose of this advisory of to update you on our current situation concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and to provide a gentle reminder, on what actions you can take to protect yourselves and others from becoming infected with the virus.

With the onset of the cooler weather, it was predicted that we would receive additional cases in Sumter County, and this has unfortunately occurred. Last week, we received 284 new cases, which is an increase from prior weeks. While the hospital has capacity to deal with increasing cases, they too have experienced a rise in their case volume.

Our experience in caring for those affected has improved greatly over the past 6-9 months. However, elders--particularly those with chronic or serious medical conditions such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, obesity, or depressed immunity--may experience more severe complications. As a community, we all have a responsibility to others to take whatever actions we can reasonably take, to protect the most vulnerable among us.

Accordingly, I am asking you to please redouble your efforts to protect yourselves and others during this critical period until vaccines become widely available. This includes wearing a mask, particularly when participating in activities indoors, maintaining social distance from others when possible and frequently washing your hands. Additionally, social activities during this holiday season such as pot-luck events and public gatherings involving singing, particularly close to one another, are associated with an increased risk of becoming infected.

Together we can flatten the curve of rising cases in this community. If you have any questions regarding this advisory, our public information officer Ms. Megan McCarthy may be reached at 352-569-3134.

Thank you for your kind cooperation as we approach this holiday season.

Respectfully,

Dr. Sanford D. Zelnick
Director, Sumter County Health Department
Thank you for taking the time to write this. Much much appreciation for your help with this and all the healing that you are part of.

In just the last week I have learned of three deaths; one a teacher and former student of mine; one a former college classmate and friendly competitor when we both coached high school basketball in the same conference; and another a long time family friend. I don’t know if my experience is common, but I am certain it is not unique. I am happy we are beginning the vaccine process, but until immunity is pretty universal, I implore everyone to be careful and vigilant. I do not want to add a TOTV friend to my list.
When the virus first started a close friend and golf partner of mine got sick. He went to the hospital and died ten days later. I was within six feet of him at Glenview a week or so before. He was an ambassador at Palmer for twelve years. This was before testing was everywhere. I was scared for me but for my wife who is not in good health. Yes, it is real and very dangerous for older people. Out group misses this person a lot and it is still hard to believe we lost him so quickly.

So my Uncle who was playing golf, working for Merrill Lynch, and jogging 3days before his Covid diagnosis is being buried this morning. His college age son accidentally brought the virus home with him just before Thanksgiving. First he was feeling crummy and had a fever. Then he couldn’t breathe so he went to the hospital. Then he had to put him on a ventilator, alone. Then he went into kidney failure, alone. Then he went into cardiac arrest, alone. Finally they allowed a couple family members to come in with him to watch him die. It’s a very horrible death. Jerry leaves behind a 58-year-old wife, five children, four siblings, and 25 nieces and nephews, that’s 35 people I know who are taking this more seriously today.

I wish you well.

it's interesting to read all these comments. those that aren't taking this seriously owe a lot to those who are. if everyone indulged their desire to "get on with life" I fear the transmission rate would be higher. I think proof of how serious this can or could be is that the Daily Sun has had a major front page story on the need to comply with recommendations. then, a recent memo from Villages Health reinforcing that need. As for citing statistics on the mortality or chance of getting really sick, well, I prefer to remember the wise words of Dirty Harry "do you feel lucky?" We are so close to getting vaccines (which I will get as soon as I possibly can) I will continue doing the most I can to avoid getting sick. the fact that the Villages has done relatively well I feel is the result of the many, many people like me who have delayed gratification through this ordeal and followed the advice of the scientists and competent medical people with expertise in the field.

First, 200,000 don't die of the flu each year, it varies from about 30,000 to 60,000. Second, there has been and will be less flue deaths because of mask wearing. This past winter in Australia where they had very strict mask mandates there were almost zero deaths from the flu. THis clearly tells us what we should be doing every winter!!!!

Seems funny the Sun Newspaper obituary section doesn't list Covid as a cause of death anymore

There are cases throughout The Villages, including my own little community. We all need to continue to be vigilant.
