A lot of folks visit the stations, not only to pick up their mail, but to make use of the amenities that are usually found there as well. Workers visit for many reasons as well. All may have trash to discard. As stated in an earlier post, if we all sorted mail and packages at the stations, it would probably require a dumpster to adequately hold all the trash. Personally, I prefer to pick up my mail and leave and sort it at my leisure at home as opposed to trying to sort in the heat, wind or rain.
Then, the simple solution is for you to do just that...

Others have their own preferences...

Because someone I don't know put my name on it?

if I put your name and address on a bag of junk, does it become "your" junk?

Obviously the simple solution is to have a larger capacity for junk mail at the mailbox station.
Apparently once they put your name on it than it becomes your junk.

Here’s another idea. Refuse to accept and deliver junk mail.

Ok, if I have this right....NO junk mail in the trash cans at the postal stations. I'll bring it home and throw it away in MY trash cans. Then I'll take my house trash to the trash cans at the postal station and throw it away there. Wow, glad I got that cleared up. This Village living is complicated.

Oh, I forgot one more thing. If there is junk mail on top of the postal station trash cans, because of one inconsiderate person, I take it and throw it in another trash can. That way it doesn't blow all over the place, which is what the OP did right? Well, they did do the right thing and throw it in another trash can, after they took the picture, right? You know so it wouldn't spread all over the ground. Or did they just take the picture, walk away to complain about it on this site and leave the trash on top of the trash can?

Lets see.........trash cans at the postal boxes? So, if not used for trash, then what are they put there for? Sorry, but until someone explains to me the purpose of the trash cans at the postal boxes, if not for trash I will use them to dump my junk mail if I wish to. I suppose they could be there to clean out one's car. Or, maybe those that are sitting in the lot eating their lunch could use it for their sandwich wrappers. Maybe trash cans located there are supposed to be for aesthetic reasons only? Maybe they are there to symbolize that most mail is trash?
Guess I will just use trash cans for trash until I am told that it is unlawful.

It’s been in The Villages News and the Sun newspaper several times reminding people not to put junk mail in the receptacles at the post office….don’t shoot the messenger and I surely don’t want to debate whether it’s right or wrong. Just telling you what I’ve read.

I don't get the Sun or the News so I guess it doesn't pertain to me.

The junk mail goes into the "TRASH" whether it stays at the postal boxes or whether it goes home, so there is no difference. Complaining about what others do in their day to day lives is ludicrous and boorish. Dumping trash is "trash" cans does no harm. If they do not wish one to deposit trash in trash cans, they should remove them. OR, they could put a sign on them stating that trash cans are for decoration only. Of course, they may be symbols of protest against what someone feels the majority of our mail really is.....trash.
