We will be arriving at our new house in Bonita in early March. We are aware of a club for Maine and Vermont residents or former residents. Does anybody know when and where this group meets. Dan and Nancy Allaire Shapleigh,Maine

We went to the Central New York Club a couple of times and found that we hung out with the same people we went with and have known for a long time. That's not to say that state clubs aren't fun, but they are something to join after you have joined everything else. |

Ah Jan, I agree again. We haven't been to the Buckeyes club yet. We seem to be having a blast just hanging out with people who talk funny.

Talk Show and Gracie Girl have a good point. I have seen couples get all wrapped up in a state club at the expense of not enjoying their neighbors.

It's not that we want to hang out with people from Maine. It's more of seeing if we might run into somebody we knew in the past.

Hi Folks,
My wife and I moved to Florida from Maine back in 1978 on Thanksgiving Day. People thought we were nuts going swimming in this "frigid" 70 degree weather. Course it was only about 15-20 and 2 feet of snow) when we left. Worked at Togus. I would move back to Maine in a heartbeat but only if I won the lottery and had an all electric everything + a huge 4 wd anything. Electric roof, sidewalk, driveway, et al. And of course my own generator. ![]() I really don't even miss the summers up there (both weeks). But I do miss the people and the camaraderi (sp?) we had. And the lobster boils. (Both her grandfather and uncle were lobster fishermen) Just got to cold what with shoveling and going to work, et al. Win the lottery would have to do neither. But that ain't gonna happen anytime soon. PLEASE, bring some REAL lobsters with you. All they have down here is crawfish on steroids. ![]() Welcome aboard!!

Downeaster....
It snowed on Wednesday got about 14-16 inches then it rained on top of the snow.... It has not been the best of winters. It has not been as bad as last year, when we got 100++ but it has been a real pain, first snow... then snow..... then brutal cold, we live on the Saco river on Irving street, ( we own the last two houses on the street) just before Diamond park and let me tell you, when the wind comes down the river you cannot stay out for a long time. One day last week it was -11. I like Maine, but when we move down to the Villages in 490 days 6 hours and 25 minutes ( not that I am counting), I do not think I will be back. My wife wants to keep a place up here but I told her to have a good time when she visits Maine.

I grew up in a summer resort in Maine but left after graduating from High School. I know all about Maine's "Summer People" It was great during the short summer but damn cold by the water during the long long winter. I haven't joined the Maine Club but opted for the Connecticut Club because I spent most of my working life there. I've been here approx. 2.5 years and have met lots of people from all over but not one from "Up Maine" yet - AAAAuh!!!!!

We lived in Rockport, ME for 12 years...we had a real love hate relationship with the state...mostly the weather...
![]() Mainers are good people and we miss that but we ran out of patience with the long winters. Sailing down Penobscot Bay in July is heaven on earth, ![]() ![]()

We vacationed a week in Maine a few years back. I was looking forward to it especially for the lobster.
I have to say that lobster for breakfast, lobster for lunch and lobster for dinner got a little old. Even McDonald's served lobster meals and advertised it on their marquee. ![]() It was very hard finding a restaurant that served beef or chicken. (Kinda like trying to find a restaurant up here in Michigan that serves alligator or crawfish.) Everything was lobster. We found Maine to have mainly small, privately owned restaurants with lobster as their specialty. To this day, lobster that was once a favorite of mine is no longer a favorite. Perhaps it was because we stayed in the resort town of York Beach and every place was catering to tourists with their lobster menus. I do have to say that Maine is a beautiful state and I was in awe of the beautiful lighthouses. Some of the highlights of our trip were spending a day on a charter fishing boat, seeing ex-President Bush on the waters in his boat surrounded by Secret Service, going moose hunting in the Moosehead Lake region, and touring Kennebunkport. We vacationed over July 4th and couldn't swim in the ocean because it was sooooo cold! Perhaps the cold was unusual but that's what we experienced. |
