I have a metal live trap for mice that I used in my horse barn (lots of sweet feed) up north. Once the mice enter they can’t find their way out. Very effective. I used to release them in “the middle of nowhere “ and they could transition back to “field mice.” I don’t know why I brought it to Florida.

You need a cat! If you have a cat I guarantee you, you won’t have any mice. But you have to want a pet a cat.

Easy solution, get a 5 gallon bucket and put about 1 1/2 gallons of water in it. Throw a couple of handfuls of sunflower seeds in the water and smear some peanut butter on the inside wall of the bucket. Then make a plank from the floor to the edge of the bucket using a scrap piece of wood. The mice, rats, and any other rodents in the area will walk the plank of death and not be able to resist diving into the bucket to get at the food. They can’t climb back out of the bucket and can only tread water for so long. After about a week the entire population will be whipped out.

Massey worked well for us, checked for possible entry points, filled those, and set traps. By the way, if you have mice, you may get snakes...

As far as a cat, you want a female cat. It is the female that hunts. As far as a pet cat, so many of the villages pets are soooooo spoiled they are useless.

Seeking water. A common mouse and rat poison is warferin. Yup the same stuff used as a blood thinner for humans with heart issues. Rats and mice cannot vomit. They eat food laced with the poison and it makes them bleed internally. That makes them seek water. My view. I am not a rat, mouse lover but many of the techniques we employ are unnecessarily cruel. Internal bleeding, drowning, stick them till they slowly die. The spring trap, is quick, cheap and done. The secret is proper placement, usually the edges of the space, and the proper bait-peanut butter works well. In terms of amazing animals and how and why they survive. A mouse can pass through a gap of 1/4 of an inch. Traditional solution is to stuff course steel wool into gaps. Also, the rate of reproduction is simply amazing. WE DON'T HAVE ANY MICE OR RATS-often that just means we do not see any mice or rats. |
