They do not make money on golf courses. They are a huge draw though for people coming here.

How much $ does it take to keep the grounds looking good on the golf courses? Probably quite a bit and they do not have that many foods offered at the golf courses.

Because they a business, here to make money. NOT to lose money on a business like movie theaters. If the movie theaters were a money maker soneone would take them over,

I can't tell you why, but you are arguing with the wrong person in drcar. It's kind of like when people try to get in a medical argument with me.

If you saw an ad for the Villages that said the reason to buy is because we have 24 movie screens versus we have 54 golf courses designed for all level of golfer.... really? 24 screens but 4 block buster movies a year wow I doubt it.

I will wait until I can rent it online although I love the big screen and acoustics.

However, I am 10 min from Brownwood.

Developer: PLEASE REOPEN THIS THEATRE. WE HAVE THOUSANDS MORE PEOPLE SOUTH OF 44 AND WE NEED THIS THEATRE.

I just don't get it. It is already there and had been in use until Covid. It will bring people to Brownwood square to spend $ at the restaurants etc. You have tons of golf courses but here is something we really need and you only have a movie theatre in Sumter landing.....
You just summed up why movie theaters throughout the Country are failing. You can stream rent or watch on any cable movie channel any of hundreds of movies without driving 10, 20 or 30 minutes and paying the price of the ticket. Apparently a lot of people are "lazy". So you want a movie theater with 8 screens to save you 12 minute drive (Brownwood to Sumter) because 1 movie has "finally" come out YOU want to see. Rent the theater and movie and have a watch party for all your friends.

The Villagers pay for the golf courses through fees. The Villages - Florida's Friendliest Active Adult 55+ Retirement Community

$189.00

This one is pretty straightforward. At $189 a month currently, this covers much of what makes The Villages such a draw. Things like golf on the executive courses, swimming, tennis, organized activities, 24-hour neighborhood watch and more.Mar 28, 2023

They move to the Villages for golf, to avoid the cold weather up north, to distance themselves from people they worked with prior to moving, to be near siblings or to be far from siblings, to be near or to be far from their kids, and many other reasons.

Golfing is the main attraction though.

The average movie ticket cost $11.75 in 2022, according to EntTelligence, a research firm. AMC charges $14-$18 per adult ticket & they are 5 billion dollars in debt. Investopedia reports that a whopping 60% of ticket sales go back to the studios.

The movie theater patrons of today are more sophisticated than those of previous generations. They expect digital quality picture & sound. They want plush comfortable seats which can cost the theater owner $1100 and up per seat. No more flickering images, noisy projectors, or those worn burgundy velour seats with the wooden arms you had to share.

Here is a breakdown of what modern movie theater equipment costs according to the top CEO’s of the most popular movie chains as reported by Indie Wire.
Media block: $7,000-$40,000
This helps convert the digital cinema package provided by a studio into data that can be projected with picture and sound.
Digital library server: $12,000-$27,000
These provide storage to hold multiple movies.
Xenon bulbs: $450-$1,300
Many out of date projectors require bulbs that need replacing after only 400-500 hours & use vast amounts of electricity compared to newer Laser Projectors.
Laser projectors: $40,000-$150,000+
State of the art with amazing clarity & huge savings in power consumption.
Screens: $3,000-$50,000
The upfront cost of installing an entirely new screen rather than just replacing one can reach up to $40,000-$50,000 for the largest PLF screens.
3-D Projection: $13,000
Many popular movies need to be shown in 3-D.
Dolby Sound: $75,000-$100,000
There’s also the cost of the Dolby Atmos sound systems.

And then you have to add in the costs of the building, maintenance, taxes, utilities, concession equipment, any loan payments, equipment upkeep (& depreciation), etc. Labor costs are going up and you need a small army of people to manage the equipment, concessions, cleaning crew, and so on.

So, if any of you Villagers have several million dollars just lying around & want to reopen a movie theater, here is your big chance. Just remember, the Morse family are the experts in making money & if there was money to made from the movie theaters, they would be doing it.

I thought it was the "loofah parties"...

They are experts at developing the ideas of the brilliant Harold Schwartz. He was the visionary who showed up at the right place and time and who had family who could enhance rather than destroy his dream. Even though it has been a nightmare to others.

There is a petion for what its worth. At least 3k plus people care (not that the Developers give a hoot).

While T V may have fixed their on paper marketing it's a little late for those who were sold on a theater being at Brownwood (amungst other things of course).

What does the trolley tour continue to say about the theater?
