On the south facing side of any home by removing your window screens, you can achieve a dramatic increase in solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) through your windows for free. I notice on a State of Hawaii web site, they give a default value of 0.7 for the SHGC of a generic window screen. Therefore, if you remove a full window screen, the SHGC for the window will be increased by about 1/0.7 = 1.43, or a 43% increase in solar heat gain. If the window screen covers half the window, then the SHGC will increase by about 21%.
Removing the screens provides an opportunity to wash the outside of the windows, further increasing the heat gain. In addition, with the shorter winter days and, in some locations, more cloudy weather, removing the screens brightens the interior of the house and the mood. |

Winter? In KC we're expecting mid teens for lows the next 3 nights; so glad this is our last Midwest winter.

Since winter is the only time the windows can be opened around here, I'll leave the screens in and suck it up.

Facts to back that up? Or is this just an opinion?

Actually the term thrown about is "climate change", which has occurred on a continuous basis going back a really long way and will continue to occur. The real issue is how much of a perturbation on natural climate cycles is caused by man's activities. The only "evidence" of the impact by man's activities comes from climate simulation computer models which have been generally unreliable and are not yet suitable for making public policy decisions. As with almost everything, follow the money to see who benefits.

There is no such thing as global warming???
Surely you jest! ![]() It's a money maker? For whom? Then please tell me why the icebergs are melting? And why is the water level of the oceans rising? And consequently, why are the polar bears threatened? Huh?

Oh boy, OK, lets address these.
Antarctic ice is increasing but arctic ice is decreasing. Your statement is a bit "black and white" when the issue is really "gray". The climate is changing and there are consequences to this. The "recent" increase in ocean levels is actually pretty small. Sea levels go up and down through climate cycles. Polar bears are actually doing quite well and their numbers are up considerably from the past because of reduced hunting. They have apparently survived for a substantial amount of time even during far warmer periods of time during our climate cycles. Using wrong/misleading data to shore up questionable theories in an attempt to win the hearts of the uninformed is really disingenuous. As I indicated before, the climate has and will continue to change - this is normal. We have had much cooler and warmer periods in the past. The real question is how much of a perturbation on the normal climate cycles has man's activities caused? This is fundamentally unknown because there is no data to diagnose this. The only "evidence" is computer simulation models which feature incomplete treatment of physical processes. I view the models as an area of continued R&D but are not ready for use as a public policy tool. I used to develop computer simulation models for the Government. People with an axe to grind or money to make will "cherry pick" every piece of data they can to support their argument. For many, the playbook is "you are stupid and just believe me". You should consider the source of any information and what they have to gain when forming your own opinions. |

Ok, .....................
Maybe I should have said "increase your carbon footprint" that work

Back to the original topic - last year in The Villages I had my heat turned on for less than 7 total days. Not too shabby when you see all the minus zero weather in Buffalo, Chicago, or Minneapolis.

Me too. Even then the heat is only on for a couple of hours in the morning.
