Remember Kool cigarettes? They marketed a styrofoam sailboat. I think it was a Snark, 11 feet long. Ours got a hole when a can of paint thinner leaked. We put the whole thing at the end of the driveway and some gentleman was happy to have it.

I live on North side, I have seen two ladies in a white pickup truck pickup trash bags from the new buyers home..., definitely looking and selling confidential info! Shred it and forget it...

Seen brand new barbecue grill put out and what looked like one time used pressure washer which probably just had clogged jet in carburetor. Like dummy I didn’t get them, now I could use new barbecue grill and gas pressure washer.

In my city up north, dumpster diving is illegal if the garbage is on private property. You can put out a note on items available for taking though.

This is routine in South Texas. A lot of usable items are discarded.

I grew up in a brand spanking new middle-class suburban neighborhood development in northwestern New Haven County, Connecticut. Back in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. If we put items out (as opposed to trashbags filled with actual trash), there'd usually be someone checking to see if the items were interesting enough to take. Sometimes someone would be building a treehouse for their kid and see just the perfect bit of leftover roofing material from a homeowner's roofing job, and bundle up the pile and toss it in their Bonneville. The only difference I see here in my Villages neighborhood, is that it happens more often. I'm fine with it though. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and all that. I've salvaged quite a few items from neighbors who just couldn't be bothered bringing things to the thrift store or call someone to pick it up, or put it on sale somewhere. I mostly repurpose them - strip the wood, sand it, and paint or stain it, depending on what it is and what I want to use it for. |

I would just advise that you shred any identifying information from the mail, bills, etc. They may be looking to compromise your identity. I have had mine stolen 3 times since I moved to The Villages. Now everything is shredded and my credit accounts are frozen so no one can open a new account.

What do you think? Garbage rummaging is called “dumpster diving” legally.

This thread is proof that we as American's, even us older and supposedly wiser group, just throw away way too much.
