Drivers never sped through the neighborhood streets (like the professional grass cutters here today do) and the dogs somehow knew to stay away from moving cars. It seemed more natural then. My parents worried about the Korean War then and whether flying saucers were real. Dog excrement was NEVER mentioned except to let the dog out when it scratched at the door (it was communicating and where the dog went to do his business, was HIS business. Ah yes the good old days......to be continued.

A few other things that confuse me about yard perfection and associated territoriality. A yard is JUST a big area comprised of insects, goose do-do, other bird droppings, sand, worms, black crawling beetles, fire ants, fertilizer, manure, commercial black soil from who-knows-where, green grass (normally not the SOFT varieties that are up north, but hard crabgrasses) and my all-time favorite........(horn blows) SPIDERS AND SNAKES.
......I don't believe that I have EVER seen a bunch of neighbors get together and sit on towels and sheets and play music and talk and be happy on that biomass that they call their yard. Now some sit in folding chairs on the CEMENT driveway (not the yard) and DO, whatever they DO. I HAVE seen that. And sitting in gazeboes watching the sunset. I can understand that! But, I fail to understand being enamored about a yard that one never uses for any activity.
And the FINAL CLINCHER is that only about 10% of the residents care enough about their own yards to cut their OWN grass.(not counting those who are physically unable to cut their grass) Even for that - they NOW have Rumba's for yard-cutting. So, they hire grass-cutting Neanderthals who put divots into the house's siding and run over plants, park in the middle of busy streets, and break ALL LAND SPEED RECORDS as they race from one yard that they don't care about to another yard that they could care LESS about.
.......So, I find it really EXCEEDINGLY strange that these same individuals have hissy fits and break out in hives whenever a dog on a leash even SNIFFS at a blade of grass in their beloved yards. They say that it takes ALL kinds to make a world?

When you were "growing up in MN", odds are you played with your dog outside.
