After reading about roof problems in the POA we had our roof inspected and Owings Corning said the roof was defective but they would not pay for labor.
They agreed to supply the roof shingles but will not pay the approximately $5,000 labor cost. It's become evident as more and more defective roofs are found OC had decided to play hard ball and not pay for labor. How is this possible?

We are now in the process of contacting the POA and starting a class action suit against OC. If OC has refused to pay labor costs for your defective roof please contact the POA.

Did Owens Corning give you that labor estimate? That sounds really high. Obviously I have no idea how big your roof is but even if you figure remove and replace labor on the high side it should be around $150 per square. I don't think $125 for remove and replace labor is unrealistic.

I know that isn't the point of your thread but just in case it comes to it make sure you're not taken advantage of on the labor side.

Correct,,, how can they NOW say they will not pay for labor. If they've done so many previous roofs and paid for everything, how can they now say they won't pay for labor. I'll ask all my neighbors, they've had there's done and I'll find out if any were told this same thing.

I got my claim # back in June but I kept getting put off by OC and the roofer about getting my shingles inspected. At that time, they were paying for everything. I think a class action suit is a good idea since I think now they are playing games.

I called the roofing company again 2 weeks ago to ask when they will inspect my shingles, and they referred me back to OC saying that Owens will now be doing all the inspecting. When I called Owens, they said they will be the only ones inspecting and eluded to the fact that perhaps only some shingles on a roof need to be replaced, not all, and they will be the judges of that from now on.

This has turned out to be a huge issue and we're not getting straight answers. POA meeting, here I come.

We had our roof done in mid November and the roofer did the inspection earlier in the year when the process was started. Owens Corning payed for everything.(1) The same goes for six or seven of my close neighbors where we all started the process at the same time with the same roofer.

Could it be that the confusion and differing information could be because of their being different OC policies for different roof ages?

Owens may be waking up to the fact that the roofing contractors may have been overcharging Owens for labor. Our roof was replaced back in June and our neighbors house was done two weeks later by a different contractor. Their roof size is less than mine but the labor billed to Owens was $1,000 more than the labor for my roof. This whole issue seems to be getting out of control. One neighbor was turned down for having a defective roof by the Owens inspector. Two months later she again contacted Owens who sent out a different inspector and this time her claim was approved.

Our roofer told us that Owens knows the length of time when defective shingles were produced, so just step up to the plate and fix them. Period.

Yes, how do find out? Do you hire an independent contractor?

Can't you just call home warranty and ask them if your house is one affected? They have always been helpful for us.

If you want to know if your roof has the defective shingles you call the Warranty Office and ask if you have Oakridge shingles. They are the defective shingles. When we called Warranty they said we should not call Owens Corning ourselves, OC would contact us. They didn't contact us so we called OC and got a claim number. Once you have a claim number you can call a roofer (doesn't have to be the original roofer). They will look at your roof and remove shingles and send them to OC. We used Scott Roofing but all local roofers are very much aware of the problem. After some time we heard back from OC who stated our roof was defective and they would supply the shingles but not pay the labor costs. Up untill very recently OC paid for the shingles and labor at no cost to the home owner. They have now changed that policy.

Well I did make a claim last year and OC claimed they inspected my roof and claimed that the type of defective shingle was not used on my house.
After reading this thread I think I may re-investigate.

for those of you who suggest a class action suit better get started now. There was a company out of Pennsylvania that had the same sort of problem back in the late 90's and they did some really unethical things to avoid the issue. It took a class action suit to get them to honor their warranty. And don't let them tell you that they will replace only the defective shingles that is what this PA company tried to do if they paid at all.
