Default Security Gate Protocol

As everyone knows, many of our security gates have 2 lanes, one marked for residents and one for visitors. Often there is a line waiting for people to scan their cards on the resident side while the visitor side is empty. I have always just gotten in line with everyone else on the resident side and waited my turn. But I see others going to the visitor side. They are obviously residents because the guard just waves them on through. Is this considered proper etiquette or is it sort of like line cutting?

That's my biggest concern in TV not counting my IRS concerns.

Everybody is just waved through, resident or non-resident. We're not a closed community.

If I see 5 cars in line at the resident gate at my village I'll go to the visitor gate at times. That's just the way I roll

Community Watch encourages the use of both lanes. Next time you pass Morse North or Morse South, you will note that the lane to the left is marked visitor/resident.

I believe that people are making WAY too much an issue of the gates. They slow down traffic where there is merging with golf carts. I would guess that few of you have EVER lived in a gated community before. I just don't understand WHY people think it is a huge issue.

There are gated communities in Orlando. Sell and move there if you think it is such a big deal. For PETE'S SAKE!!!!!

I try to always use the Visitor/Resident lane so I don't have to open my window in the rain, or when A/C or heat is running and to avoid a lane change once I pass the gate.

The worst gates are gates where residents have to cut into the thru lane once they pass the gate. IMO, neither the Developer or Sumter County anticpated or planned for the volumes of traffic that must pass through gates north of CR 466 when they were originally constructed..

It's not a huge issue and just because someone asked a question, hardly calls for the suggestion that they should sell and move. But since you seem to know about gated communities in Orlando, maybe you can shed some light on which of these communities have gates that open to County or Town roads and are basically open to anyone wishing to pass through? As a former resident or Orlando, I can't think of any that fit that description.

We wore out the power window motor on the driver's side of our last car, from all of the opening and closing, going through the resident side of the gates. The gate we use the most is the south Morse gate and we always go through the resident/visitor side now. We are hoping that we won't burn out the window motor in THIS car.

You are right. My post was mean spirited.

Gracie,

Now remember you were going to be more funny less mean! Naaaaaaaaaaa stay the way your are!

OK all! Here is my ( NEWBIE ) question.

You are waved through either gate lane and you see a Cart on the Right getting ready to cross.

Do you stop and they have the right of way to cross?

Or do you have the straight ahead right away and go?

Orrrrrrrrrrrr do you just Goose it and run over the cart!

Or do you stop quick let em go and get rear ended?

Oh I am gonna get it now aren't I?

Just asking?

Carts must yield, HOWEVER, those who might be new to this community, might not know this...and when a car stops to let a cart pass, the cart could be in danger with cars coming from the opposite direction.....AND, cars are now backed up while waiting for that cart to go by. It's much easier for a cart to wait for the cars to go through...and it's the correct thing to do.

Personally, there are times when running over the cart could seem like the right thing to do....but we mustn't ....

The carts have the stop sign and must wait for the road traffic to end before crossing.

I've seen cars stop after going through the gate and then wave carts to cross. This is a bad habit by motorists who think they're being polite. But it just causes mayhem, and you may get rear ended by car behind you because they don't expect you to be stopped.

If I'm driving my cart from the left side at a gated entrance, I stop, then venture out to the island in between the lanes and let cars through then cross when the gate goes down. I don't even cross when the motorist will motion me to. I just tell them "you first".

This keeps car backups at the gate to a minimum. I never argue with someone four times my size.

Be really careful driving your cart and crossing the new gates where a lot of construction is going on like the St James entrance where vehicles barely
slow down because they gates open automatically. And time is money.
