Default myths about painting in the Villages

Lets start with a short Bio. I am the founder and previous owner of Investment Painting Contractors. The company was started in 1966 by me to help pay for college. Along the way I served my apprenticeship and became a journeyman painter. I am qualified to apply every kind of coating from Latex to Chemical Coatings.
I have painted in all the lower 48 states and Puerto Rico, and had large contracts of over one million dollars each. I have painted bridges, water towers, sewage treatment plants, shopping malls, over 500 Walgreens,1000 Taco bells and 500,000 thousand feet of various offices airplane hangers and warehouse space for Northwest Mutual Ins.
I started painting new houses in Detroit and after a brief break for Vietnam I went into commercial for over 25 years. Crisscrossing the United states for every Major corp. in the country.

Getting tired and older I went into residential repaints and commercial work in the state of Wisconsin. Where I won eight Angies List Super Service
Awards From 2001 to 2006.

When I decided to retire Chris Gibbs who had been with me since he was a kid took over the business and moved it to Florida in 2007.

After my not so brief BIO Lets talk about the preceeding posts.

The painters are sub contractors on the new houses in the Villages. The bids are competive based on the lowest labor and material cost, except some premier homes where there is more latitude.

The interior walls are sprayed and back rolled with paint and primer. Usually the same color thru-out to make it easier for the buyer to apply their color coats to match their furniture, taste ETC.

The Villages does not purchase the paint not even to paint the signs at each village mail boxes ETC.

As far as SUNCOLOR paint it is a new wholesale paint supplier that applied and got a business license in Orlando March 2012.

I just thought I would pre Qualify Myself before I added my two cents

Investment - thanks for your informative post. Nice to have someone on here with real experience. Quick question - are you familiar with Color Wheel paints? It was used in The Villages for the last 4 or 5 years. I looked at Consumer Guide for exterior paint recommendations, and Sherwin Williams was one of the paints listed, but didn't see anything on Color Wheel.

Not sure...but have to wonder if "Color Wheel" isn't the name of their business! If you ever drive behind their location, sometimes the doors are open and LOTS of paint cans are sitting inside on the floor and to me they look like varying "kinds" of paint. Have never actually checked them out however.

I used the same paint and color the developer used. I painted the house myself using brush and rollers. This coat lasted about 7 years. I repainted again using the same paint and method and this third coating has lasted well over 10 years. First coats of paint that are sprayed will never last as long as second/third coats that are brushed and rolled. Also, paint colors are identified by 5 digit Federal Standard Color Codes. If you get the color code, you can go to any manufacturer or sales outlet and get the same color paint (within reason). I usually mix all my paint together before I start painting to achieve color consistency throughout the entire batch.
FINALLY ... a voice of reason!!

Default Low-Odor & Low-VOC Paints?

Interesting thread...

Does anyone know if TV's painting subcontractors offer low-odor and low-VOC paints as an option? We've just painted our soon-to-be-on-the-market house with Sherwin-Williams Harmony paint and it worked quite nicely. We'd like to have the same done in our future TV home.

Thanks!

They used Anchor Coatings Paint on my home....it's made locally in Leesburg. The contractor recomended it highly! I was happy with the results.

Have not heard of this. Our house is only 6 months old and all paint used was Sherwin Williams.
