ARE YOU ONE OF THESE PEOPLE, JUST A REMINDER
"Too many golf cart drivers in The Villages are speeding" "Golf carts are not supposed to travel at a speed greater than 20 miles per hour here in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown. However, we seldom see golf cart drivers obeying the 20 mph limit. Safety experts will tell you that speeding is a major factor when it comes to traffic deaths and injuries. Excessive speeding reduces the amount of time the driver has to react in a dangerous situation to avoid a crash. There are many more risk factors involved when golf carts are speeding. First of all, many golf carts are not equipped with seatbelts. That means a sudden swerve, bounce or bump – exacerbated by high speed – could be dangerous and even deadly for those traveling in a golf cart. Too many times people have fallen from golf carts and experienced severe injury and even death. Second, golf carts are frequently sharing the multi-modal paths in The Villages with vulnerable pedestrians and bicyclists. Too many times we’ve seen speeding golf carts passing pedestrians and bicyclists on the multi-modal paths, creating an unsafe situation. We also know that speeding and alcohol impairment often coincide. It’s against the law to drink to excess and drive a golf cart. It’s not acceptable to have open liquor while operating a golf cart. We are pleading with golf cart drivers to slow down and enjoy their retirement. Being injured in a golf cart accident or causing injury to another person is simply not worth the minutes you might save by driving too fast." |

For those not allready aware, especially new residents in the southern areas, it's not just speeding.
In the Eastport/Middleton areas, it's not uncommon to encounter new 4+ seat LSV's moving 25-30 mph in the diamond lanes. Wildwood PD and the sheriffs are citing a Criminal Infractions for driving a golf cart capable of exceeding 20 mph. They issue citations for “failure to register a motor vehicle,” which requires the individual to appear before a judge. |

That is the correct response.
![]() If you people are driving an extended distance and you have more than two carts on your tail - you are the problem. The worst though, are the ones doing 20 mph and then speed up to 25 when someone tries to pass. |

I love doing that, if I’m going 20 why do you need to pass. I guess your username says why.

yes, slow drivers are a problem, but less of a problem than fast drivers on MMP.
when walking, against traffic, many won't slow down while not moved over for pedestrians. Most mover over at least 1/2 of the width, unless there is another cart coming in the opposite direction. Its the people who DONT slow down when a pedestrian is walking and there is a cart coming in the other direction who are the potential problems. I have seen a cart leave the MMP completely to go around us on the right hand side, just because he didn't want to slow down. I have seen a cart come right down the middle of the MMP with people walking on both sides , yelling "Get out of the ROAD!", I have seen carts passing carts, now two abreast with walkers on the side of the MMP. . just can't wait to pass the walkers before passing a cart. I don't mind fast drivers, as I drive fast as well, even in a car. But its stupid to drive fast with any pedestrians in the area, around blind/sharp and when there are many carts around. There is a time and a place for speeding, but its not all the time. . just think about if and when an elderly, any of us, walker wobbles abit into your cart path, its only takes a walker's wobble and you maybe in for a very large sized insurance bill. |

The OP title is Please Slow Down. It addresses Villagers who often drive faster than 20 mph. A rising problem. Driving over the speed limit is the problem we are discussing.

I typically drive the mmp at 20-22mph. If I encounter a slower cart going 12-15mph I just wait for the proper place to pass. I don’t have to go over my typical speed. Often they will pull over and wave me past. Then there is the person who has to pass me at my typical speed. I guess it’s just the fact that there cart will go 30, so they must.

In addition to the speeding, there is also a problem with seat belts. In the reporting on accidents you have people thrown out their seats, one just recently hit a tree, all because they don’t have on seatbelts. I just don’t understand it.
