Default Spectrum Router Disconnects

I have Spectrum internet in Richmond and I have been using the Spectrum WiFi router which has been perfect except it keeps getting disconnected while I am up north. I don't have much on the network - just the Ecobee thermostat, the wireless front door lock and the Wyze doorbell camera - but it was happening even when I didn't have the doorbell camera, or the door lock.

The modem stays connected but the router goes off-line. Fortunately, I have the Empty Nest people and they unplug and plug in the router and then it works for a while - sometimes a month or two, sometimes a few weeks.

I don't have the option of Quantum Fiber where we are. It's either Spectrum or Xfinity.

Up north, I have a Netgear router that I set to reboot automatically once a week just to keep it fresh. It's a setting in the firmware.

One of my neighbors bought their own router. I didn't get a chance to ask why - maybe for reliability or maybe because they have a lot more devices on their network.

Anyway, I was just wondering if someone else had any thoughts on this and maybe some info on how to avoid the router disconnects.

I have Spectrum. I used to have the same issue when we first moved in. Have not for quite a while now. I always suspected that it because we were in a new area and new customers were being connected.

I don't think that would be the case recently here in Richmond. No new homes being built here (for now).

While you are away, put it on a timer to go off then on at something like 1AM.

Have you reported this to Spectrum?

If it was your router that disconnected then Spectrum could blame your equipment. Since it is their router disconnecting from their modem it seems like they would be interested/obligated to make it right.

We didn’t connect to Spectrum until March 2023, haven’t had any problems since we started, but majority of building was completed

Flush dns and reboot every day. Tp link equipment works best. The cable company modem, router was was garbage. 100 dollars for arris/tp link on amazon.

Also use google dns, not the cable company. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Use a batch file.
Ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /flushdns
Ipconfig/renew

A couple of other ideas:

- You should not have to reboot anything every couple of weeks (or even months)
- Can you reboot the modem remotely? This still shouldn't be necessary but if it corrects the problem then at least you could do it yourself rather than asking the management company.
- Is it possible to restart the DHCP server on the modem? Doing this may cause the connected devices, like the router, to "wake up" and talk to the router. Again, this shouldn't be necessary but if it corrects the problem.....

Simple solution is a mechanical timer that cycles power once a day.
Until then, contact Spectrum, ask for a bill credit. If it's out for a week, and you are paying more money for someone to go reset it, then the full month bill amount credit is reasonable. (for every occurrence)

Once I had Spectrum, I promptly returned their router and bought a NetGear router... I saw no reason to pay the monthly rental...

There isn’t a monthly rental on spectrum equipment. It free.

I have the same issue, except I have my own router (TP Link). I don't have this issue UpNorth, so I assume it a Spectrum problem. Streaming TV also buffers more on Spectrum.

The mechanical timer sounds like a good idea. I will try it when I return to TV.

You can't do that if you are UpNorth for the summer.

Maybe as part of some promo, but not in general. I think they were going to give me the modem free but charge for a router.

Glad I'm not you.
I've had spectrum for over 2 years and router & modem have always been free.
