A friend and I went for lunch today around 11:30. The place was pretty crowded but we were seated in a booth. I ordered a Rise and Shine burger which was a burger, smoked bacon, fried egg, caramelized onions and gruyere cheese on a brioche roll. My side was cole slaw. My friend had a crab burger with a side of onion rings. She also ordered a vanilla shake. I ordered my burger rare and it came out a little bit more on the medium rare side but was fine. However, the burger was difficult to eat as it was greasy which in my opinion gave it flavor. I had to eat it with a fork. I wish that the onions were cooked a little bit more. When I think of caramelized onions I think of crispy onions. The cole slaw tasted good except that there were some bits of onion and green peppers in it which I could have preferred that they be left out of cole slaw. As to the crab burger my friend said it was spiced a little bit too much for her liking but she felt that a lot of people would probably like it that way.

I don't mean to be that negative as I will return to Square One and try something else and not order cole slaw as a side dish. Just wanted to be honest.

When we left about 12:15 there was a line waiting.

You did not do a negative posting at all. It was an excellent post that told how the food was prepared and your opinion of it.

[QUOTE=LittleDog;861116] I ordered my burger rare and it came out a little bit more on the medium rare side but was fine. However, the burger was difficult to eat as it was greasy which in my opinion gave it flavor. I had to eat it with a fork. I wish that the onions were cooked a little bit more. When I think of caramelized onions I think of crispy onions.

When my husband and I ate there,
I noticed that some burgers had mayo on them.
When you put mayo on something hot, it melts,
and that is probbly what makes their burgers "juicy."

Carmelized onions are never crispy.
They are sauteed very slowly, taking on a brown color, but still very soft.
When prepared this way, they take on a much sweeter flavor.

I think you may be thinking of onion straws which are fried, thin and crispy.

Ate there last fri. Had a bacon cheese burger. Was very good but not worth $10.99
Non happy hour draft beer is $5.00, also too expensive.
The best deal there is on wednesday, the onion stack is $3.00.
Onion stack and water w/ lemon. cheap snack............

I don't find a post like this bashing or negative. You were pointing out some things that you didn't like. I wouldn't want onions in my cole slaw so that's good to know.

The problem with ANY restaurant review can be summed up by John's line quoted above.

The menu says caramelized onions but John did not associate that with the proper item. His fault? Sure, (I'm sure they would have substituted crispy onion strings if he had asked) but readers need to read all restaurant reviews with that understanding.

Best bet: Try it for yourself and then decide if you want to go back.

Here's an explanation of the process...caramelizing is merely a term for the process...probably due to the color when they're done.

Caramelizing onions, by slowly cooking them in a little olive oil until they are richly browned, is a wonderful way to pull flavor out of the simplest of ingredients.)

I for one fully understand the love one feels for their pets or should I say family members. We are dog owners but draw the line on dining out. I know this post is about Square 1 Burgers and we can't wait to try them out.

Now, here is an excerpt from a blog written by Suzanne that is worth repeating. The biggest concern most people neglect to mention...

ALLERGIES. There are millions of children and adults with severe allergies to dogs. It poses a health risk for them to be in an establishment that has pet dander. Should these paying patrons, human beings, be subjected to itching, wheezing, coughing or WORSE just so that a dog can relax under the table? It is completely ludicrous to subject one human being to a dangerous health environment so that an animal can enjoy the outdoor seating. Its shocking that your article completely ignores perhaps the most important crux of this argument – the fact that dogs in dining establishments can cause a health risk for other patrons.

This is not just about the fact that dogs carry fleas, walk barefoot on the pavement, step in their own urine and excrement and then walk into a cafe or restaurant where FOOD is being served. This is not just about the fact that waiters who may pet the dog, or brush past and contaminate their apron with pet dander may get harmful bacteria in another diner’s FOOD. This is not just the fact that dogs may be rambunctious, jump on the table, or try to grab some of the food and destroy the dining experience of paying customers. Nor is it just about the fact that pet owners may pet their dog and then take their hands and touch glasses, cutlery, plates and napkins, contaminating the washing water for restaurant equipment that is used to serve FOOD. This is not just about the fact that, according to the written law, the FDA has banned live animals from establishments where food is served. It is ILLEGAL, however you may try to brush it off or explain it away, those regulations are there to protect people. Not just from salmonella and e-coli, but from the harmful pathogens that dogs naturally carry. It is not only for these reasons that dogs should be banned from establishments where food is served. It is also for the fact that the simple act of bringing your dog into a restaurant or dining patio can cause tremendous and severe health risks for those who are allergic to dogs. One paying patron’s infatuation with their animal should never supersede the health and safety of another PAYING PATRON, especially when food is involved.
No... those people can sit inside.

The state of Florida would and does disagree.....

If you see dogs on patios that concern you then follow the instructions below. Complaining on this site and even to the offenders does nothing but the health inspector will make a difference.

Even if they have the required permit there are many requirements they must meet which are outlined on the website link at the bottom and here.

Only Cody's has a permit

Presently, Cody’s Road House in Lake Sumter Landings in The Villages is the only restaurant in Sumter County permitted under Section 13-735 of the Land Development Code. If you have observed dogs being allowed into outdoor dining areas in unpermitted restaurants, please advise me and I will contact the restaurant to advise them of the permit requirements. If you have visited Cody’s Road House and believe they are not complying with the requirements of their permit, please also let me know and I will assign an inspector to review their compliance.

That wasn't the point. The point was that in restaurants which have the proper permits, as permitted by the State of Florida, if you don't want to sit with the dogs, sit inside.

I don't understand why everyone is getting so upset about dogs at Square 1 preventing others from sitting outside...let's see is it the view of a parking lot or the pleasant aroma from car exhausts as they drive by.
If a restaurant has a policy allowing dogs and you don't like, go somewhere else. If you have a peanut allergy I am sure you don't go to Five Guys, if you have a severe shellfish allergy I am sure you don't go to Bone Fish. There are plenty of restaurants.
If you really thought about it, I would be more concerned with how my food is being prepared...do you think the waiters wash their hands after clearing each table and touching the dirty plates, glasses and silverware, before they bring you your glass or plate. Oh, and that chair you're sitting on...how do you know the person before you didn't have a little accident.
I have lived in 14 states and traveled the world, and I have been to pet friendly restaurants in most of these places...I guess I am lucky because I have never gotten a disease from a dog sitting under a table.
I love my dog...no, he doesn't go everywhere with me. But for those who do take their animals everywhere....it's good to know there are places that will cater to their need.
