I'm here full-time and all of these stated issues are here during the summer months too. In the winter months, there are just more people doing the same things, so it seems worse.
Most times, when I see someone going around the roundabout in the wrong lane, the car has Florida plates on it... i.e. probably a full timer ... Just sayin..... |

Why do people, mostly little elderly ladies, think they can take their cars (CARS, not carts) and attempt to drive over the golf cart bridge on 441??? I saw a woman the other day in a Prius...she must have been at least 90 years old....driving on the path, past the dog park and slowly inching her way up the bridge until her mirrors scraped the sides and she got stuck. People were screaming at her, chasing her and trying to stop her but she never heard a word.

I read these stories about the real elderly persons in TV and all I can do is smile. I am one of those very lucky people who, as a nurse, just loves to be with older people. I know they can be forgetful, cantankerous, and sometimes dangerous - but they also have so much to offer ....and they are a mirror of what I'll turn-into in a few years. I'm not yet in TV, but I hope I will be in a few months...and I hope that the "relaxed" style of life there will allow me to slow down my driving. Look around at the beautiful surroundings and be careful of those mistakes of the elderly and watch-out for the poor people who still have their "city mentality" of driving.

What finally happened? If she got stuck, there must have been some sort of "rescue" made to her and the car. Did the police come to the situation or the Community Watch come to help her get the car back on the road? Isn't there the white post barrier at either end of the golf cart bridge to prevent a car from going on the path onto the bridge? |

My friend has a serious back injury, uses a cane, and is in a lot of pain as she awaits surgery. While driving her golf cart and approaching the resident's entrance at the Village of Bridgeport Sumter Landing, she slowed to ride over the yellow traffic "humps". Two women in a cart behind hers, yelled at her to "hurry up" and impatiently drove around my friend's moving cart right into the path of an oncoming resident's car. The resident was able to avoid an accident, and the two women drove on. hurling filthy curses about slow and old drivers. My friend is 55.......

There are no posts at the ends of the bridge. She just drove on the sidewalk and up she went. Someone called a tow truck to pull her out. Community Watch never showed up...imagine that! |

Yesterday, I was in my car stopped at a light. i looked around and saw a woman driver rubbing both her eyes at the same time. Her car was still moving, she had both hands off the wheel and her eyes covered.
Luckily she hit the brake before she hit anyone. Clueless ! |

My "other half" says I tend to look for the mistakes folks make while driving (whether cars or carts). Every time we're out we see someone do foolish things. I agree with the poster that in winter there's just more of us...so we see it happen more, but it's all year round. I would say that I see a lot of cars with FL licenses doing really stupid (I mean, silly) things!!! But golf cart drivers really take the cake. Today saw a young woman with her cart definately loaded. Four little kids in the rear seat I might add and at least 3 folks in the front seat...make a right had turn onto Stillwater from a side street in Caroline without stopping. She was really going fast too. I'm not even sure if she looked both ways. The only good thing was she didn't pull in front of our car or it would have been "curtains" for those folks!!! The other day we saw a "Granma" holding her baby grandchild (more of a very young toddler) in her lap while she was driving her golf-cart. THAT really makes me nervous!!!

In keeping with this thread and having lived here fulltime for over six years Ihave witnessed no less than 6 cars on the cartpaths, cart drivers who stop suddenly on the carpaths for any number of reasons, car drivers who have stopped midway in a right turn to let other cars/ carts pass, shoppers who have left their groceries in their grocery carts and drove away. Joggers in the diamond lane that defy you. Drivers car/cart who wait until the very last second and then decide to pull out from a driveway or side street. Families who pile into a car like teenager did in telephone booths. Cart drivers who blast their radio so loud that it would drown out the sound of a plane overhead . so for me a defensive pessimism keeps me alert |

OK, I just have to add this one: only living here 3 days, and I decide to go and get the mail keys. Coming back home to the security gate in nearby neighborhood. I see the security arm down at the gate, I panic, and freeze in my car. Poor guy behind me in a golf cart who looks rather frail, behind me, and now there's even more cars behind me. Guy gets out of his golf cart to PUSH the button for arm at gate to raise. Duh! I forgot that you don't need a gate pass to get thru the gates!
Let's all remember that we have done some stupid things in public. |
