I don't live in TV and I've never responded to a thread but this topic gets my juices flowing and I have to jump in.
I've owned a Tesla for 6.5 years and it's the best car I've ever had, hands down....not even close. I have 125k miles on the car and still have the same breaks, in fact, the only thing I've done is changed tires. Breaking is far superior because of one pedal driving. You accelerate with your right foot and when you take your foot off the accelerator the regenerative breaking pulls you back (kind of like down shifting in a manual transmission car) so you very rarely use your breaks (maybe 10% of the time). No oil changes, no radiator flushing, no transmission work and I get over the air updates about every other month. That means while my car is charging (at night) in my garage Tesla installs software updates that make the car better. Better high speed efficiency, better maps, better - I can go on and on.

Tesla charging stations are there for long road trips, not for use of daily charging. I have a dryer outlet at my home, my office, and my summer home. I pay for my electric and the gas mileage equivalent is something like 136 mpg compared to a ICE (internal combustion engine) that gets 32 miles mpg. Once you drive an electric car you shutter at filling up a gas car for $65. Here's a fact for everyone, we're going to run out of oil someday, that's guaranteed. Sustainable energy is the way to go. Solar, wind, geothermal, hydro power are no brainers. What's the downside? I get it that most of the TV population are older folks but one thing if for sure, electric cars are better in every way and there's a very good chance your children will own an electric car and your grand children will probably only be able to buy an electric car when they're old enough. They're faster, safer, cheaper to operate, less moving parts and you don't have to carry around 20 gallons of highly flammable liquid under your back seat.

I can hear the typewriters going already. Car fires. Everyone can stop typing, ICE vehicles are 11 times more likely to catch fire. I'm not political. I'm not a salesmen. I like to think about the future and I love to drive. I'm a car guy. Electric cars are far superior and understand that most older folks won't buy one but they are the future.

As far as taxes go.... the federal government will figure out a way to correct the loss of highway taxes on electric vehicles, that I'm sure of. I hope I've informed some folks, I don't mean to upset anyone.

Interesting post even though I don't completely buy into it. Electric is not without it's down side. Case in point; California recently asked owners NOT to charge their cars for a 48 hour period due to a strain on the power grid. Imagine if 100% of the cars in CA and surrounding states were electric.

Tesla would not be in business today had not the government subsidized the cost. You did not pay the true cost of production plus some profit on your vehicle.

Questions: how far can you travel before you have to recharge? How long does it take to recharge from 10% capacity? Do you believe electric as a only vehicle is currently a viable option for those that want to take long road trips?

Not sure that I would want a system that brakes every time I take my foot off the accelerator but to be fair; I have not tried it. The cost of brakes over the lifespan of any car is pretty insignificant.

Like you I believe pure electric is the future but it won't happen until major strides are made in battery technology.

And, what’s really sad about how much it costs us to control and protect the oil fields is that we (the US) use only a small fraction of that oil.
Well, until very recently, we were no longer importing oil from the Middle East and we were a net oil exporter...

Owning an electric car implies you live on a leash.

Wake up
I don’t have a stake in this discussion, but I’m curious to see documentation on one point, since most of us use both these commodities:

“Electricity costs more than gasoline.”

Thank you.

Not always. More and more energy companies are trying to include renewables (solar & wind mostly) and others are using cleaner generating solutions like natural gas & nuclear.
