I just checked the Red Roof pet policy and it states "One well-behaved family pet is permitted unless they are prohibited by state law or ordinance." Having indicated that you have 2 dogs and 1 cat, how did you get around Red Roof's pet policy?

I've never had a problem at Check In. The desk people are always very welcoming. We always ask for an outside room at the back which usually gives us good access to green space for walking the dogs. We have the option of the dogs sleeping in the car. We are very careful to be responsible pet owners. We would never leave an animal unsupervised in a motel room.

Thanks K9! I just got a new idea for ID Tags from a dog lover at the Dog Park. I had some new tags made up at Petco. They each say "Reward $500" with telephone numbers. Rather than names and addresses, I think offering a large reward is a much more effective way to get a pet returned.

Barefoot, I think that is a GREAT idea. Even for those evil-doers who steal pets for resale (or worse), it would be easier to collect the reward than re-sell the pet. Here's a high-five for you for sharing this idea:

Our cat sounds very much like yours and I brought her down from Tennessee (13+ hour drive) without much problem. I bought two large cat carriers and stuck them together end to end so she could move freely from one to the other. One box had her litter tray and the other had her bed, food, and water. She seemed to calm down after about the first hour of driving and slept a good part of the trip.

Other than using one or more carriers, I'm not sure how to safely transport your kitty. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Good luck with the move.

Default Transporting cats by car

If the move isn't for a while, I'd put the cats into their carriers and take them for a few errands to get them used to the car. Feed them lots of treats immediatley after to make it a positive experience. If they like catnip, spray the inside of their carriers with catnip.

If they can fly, you might want to check Pet Airways, which is not inexpensive. Continental usually treats its feline cargo quite well. Just be mindful that many airlines will not take pets at certain times of the year due to implied delays and pets having to sit, say on the tarmac. If you want a quick read on which airlines are the best for feline cargo, I'd call a few breeders and ask them which airline(s) they use.

Otherwise, depending on the the time of year, you may be able to entice a college or graduate student driving home for the summer (less rowdyness than spring break) to drive the cats to The Villages.

Bon chance.

Please do not subject you pets, feline or canine etc., to becoming "cargo" in the baggage hold of an airplane. There are so many deaths because of this practice. Most of these deaths (and severe suffering) are not public knowledge.

Just don't. Not a good idea.

If you must fly, take your cat(s) in an airline approved under-the-seat pet carrier so the cat will be comfortable. There is usually a $50 fee.

With our cat, we used a large wire crate meant for a dog, so the cat had plenty of room to move around. Inside the crate, we placed a soft bed, food & water. We also elevated the crate so the cat could see outside. (That helps stop car sickness). He was fine all the way from Alabama to Florida.
