The starting salary in Florida is nothing like it might be in another State. That goes for nurses and teachers.
I beg to differ. My youngest is not the only nurse in the family. We are not originally from Florida. It's just a sign of the times.

Make your $$ out of Fl, build up your retirement & retire in Fl--otherwise you will not have a great retirement

Well, back to the original subject.....I think the video was cute but perhaps he was fired because he was using The Villages to promote his online business,of blogging, etc. the Villages management is very protective of their band and rightfully so. Also, as someone else suggested, all,of the footage shown may not have be his own work.

Again I think many are missing the point. While the video may have been harmless he likely was using proprietary film footage and TVs name to promote his own business.....an online blogger.

fredthefisherman: are you trying to hook me? One of the primary reasons for "at will" is so a company can layoff people without a legal challenge. And then, of course a union may fight it or if you are under a contract then a dispute will follow the conditions of that contract between employer and employee.

However, if an employer cites the reason for firing someone say as "performance related" then the employee would have an opportunity to hire an attorney and file a wrongful termination lawsuit and demand the employer establish their claim of the employees's poor performance.

I am not an attorney but I worked in Human Resources and had been involved in a number of employment related lawsuits. Bear in mind that employers are always under the threat and guard against claims of discrimination and ensuing lawsuits because of race, gender, etc and so the at will concept appears simple in concept but is much more complicated in its application

I am not an expert but this had been my observation from past experiences

The video was cleaver and funny. Nothing derogatory about The Villages in it's content. Reading his Dad's facebook page, it sounds as if he was truly fired. And to me that looks like a bad decision. Nothing he did or said or showed could have a negative impact on The Villages, and it looks like he is pretty creative.

I hope he is snapped up by a group which will give him a better opportunity than he had here. Too bad! does not make the Media Group look very sharp to have fired him for this.

No it doesn't. BUT..... Sometimes there is more to the story than what we read on an online forum.

Might as well get use to it, there will be more leaches in the future. All the little chickens coming home to roost. I find it offensive that little mooch that should be grateful to have place to live has the balls to offend and not expect bad press. Glad he got fired. This place suppose to be retirement communtity not nursery spoiled brats.

Again I must say that many are missing the point. No matter how cute or harmless the video is, it's likely that he is using proprietary film footage and using TV's name to promote his own business as a blogger while an employee of TV.

That might be the case but we do not have any evidence of that just yet.

As a former non Union employer in an at will state. I could fire someone if I didn't like the color of their shoestrings and there was nothing they could do about it. End of story..no lawsuits

Here s the dad's post on Facebook. The worst part is of this is that the video was posted 6 months ago and he was just fired this week.

Based on this "Parody" of Life in The Villages, my son Daniel, has been fired by The Villages Media group. This short documentary, meant to be humorous, was deemed "derogatory and an embarrassment to the company" by the leadership of the Villages Media Group. My son worked for this group for a year and did most of the videography that was show daily on The Villages television station. He took off 4 days off during the year and walked in today to find out from his boss, Jill, that he was being fired immediately.
Imagine being 24 years old and hearing this because of something you posted on social media six months ago that was intended to be funny.
Daniel filmed many people in many different "happy", but really irrelevant, Villages environments because that is what The Villages Media wants to show.
I am a retired United States Navy veteran and love living in The Villages, but the actions taken today by this company have really made me think if this is the place I want to spend the rest of my life.
My son has many talents that The Village Media Group
suppressed. I hope he takes this opportunity and moves forward in a way that The Villages Media Group is not able to do.

No your concept for at will was right and again this issue can get very complicated. I can't tell you the number of managers vice presidents etc I counseled who invoked the "at will" rule at me and ignored my advice only to get egg on their face. Frankly and it may appear as an anti human resource stance I don't think companies should always have their ways with employees.
An objective analysis should always be made in order to be fair to the company, employees and the company's customers. A company that shows utter disregard for the treatment of its employees sow the seeds of destruction. And an employee who shows disregard for the company sow seeds for their own destruction.

I enjoy your posts

Shadow: You are correct in that statement except that if any employee really believes it wasn't the color of their shoe strings that was the cause then s/he could institute a lawsuit to determine that perhaps it wasn't the color of his/her shoe strings at all but the color of his/her hair which is now gray.

Suppose a vice president was terminated because the president didn't like the fact that he wore hush puppies and the president wanted all his staff to wear winged tips and dress in pin striped suits and power ties. Suppose Human Resources warned this elitist thinking president to reconsider and he ignored this advice and went behind HR back and fired the guy anyway. And suppose the guy was one of the protected classes and sued claiming discrimination

A good trial lawyer and believe me when I say many trial lawyers are excellent would carry that employee through a Human Rights hearing with the end result being the ALJ declaring that the plaintiff had a right to sue and then the trial lawyer would sue and then would level such an attack that this company would surrender because it would be more economical to settle the lawsuit rather than defend it.

This example is why many in this nation want to apply the British rule wherein the loser of a lawsuit pays the expenses.

This is also why when someone says "I can fire you and you can' do anything about it" causes some to say that's your opinion and their remedy is called due process. And you know juries often don't like people who say I can fire you and you can't do anything about it.

Personal Best Regards:
