Default water bill

Just got back from TV and opened my water bill. Since I'm not there full time, I rely on the timer to irrigate. I've only been getting bills since July and this months is the highest yet by about 5000 gals. Can I assume that it has been very dry and that the device that monitors moisture (don't know the name) has probably let it run every cycle? Has anyone else seen there use gone up the last month? Just wondering if I should have some one check it.

I haven't seen my water bill for last month yet but I do know it was a very dry month. I think my sprinklers ran every cycle which is somewhat unusual.

Sometime ago, we left for an extended period and received an obscenely high water bill to the tune of hundreds of dollars more than usual. We have someone monitor our property including the irrigation system and landscaping. Regarding the big bill, we contacted the water company and the first response from the agent that took the call was that we probably had a leaky toilet. After diplomatically adjusting from that insult to my intelligence, I assured her it wasn't the case and requested a water company representative schedule a visit to our home.

He checked for leaks, the meter, and all systems. No leaks, no problems. I believe they subsequently changed the meter. Billing returned to normal. One suggestion (excuse) was that while we were away, lightening may have struck nearby and caused electronics in the sprinkler system to add multiple water times. I rejected that theory immediately for many reasons.

Bottom line......I paid the bill. I have a recollection of another thread on TOTV where other Villagers occasionally receive extra high bills that appear without convincing explanation. I haven't heard of anyone getting an adjustment.

The sensor on your sprinklers is there to shut them off during a rainstorm. Nothing more. The sensor material drys out in a few hours after the storm ends and the sprinkler is then ready to run again.

Some areas have buried sensors that measure moisture in the soil. Mine is set for 19%, if the moisture content is above this irrigation will not come on. Today the reading is 5% it will come on at the scheduled time. We have had a very dry month.
