Default So, The Villages really is a gated community

If one believes the Oxford English Dictionary

I remain skeptical because I am Gulf South born and bred and the OED also calls a po'boy a poor boy.

Default What's this I hear?

Oh, Rap, I am afraid you have misunderstood........

The Villages is not a gated community. The Villages is a gatored community. Did you not see the news about that big guy lookin' for love on the Cane Garden Golf Course last week?

--But, hey, you had me at the mention of the OED.

It's gated, not guarded.

The $4 trail fee was unknown to you when you bought here? There is no fee for walking the course.

You do not have to use the Internet for making tee times. You can do it entirely free by telephone.

Yes, free golf!

Try to find another community with the same quality as The Villages. Please do!

How rude! No $4 trail fee was mentioned to us when we bought here 24 years ago, we were told we would automatically be members of the country club, no fee was mentioned. When I came to close on our house, there was a pipe running from our lake to remove water. We were told that it was because there was flooding from our lake. I said I don't see any flooding and was told it was further down. I can see the whole lake from my property, no flooding. After we moved her we found out that the water was being pumped to fill a lake on a golf course, because our lake has a natural spring in it. We paid a premium price for lake front property, which we no longer have. They keep the golf course lake filled so it looks nice, while our lake is now down to the lowest point ever. Also by the time we moved in, the pipe was gone, everything had been put underground, and we get to look at big green boxes and manhole covers for the pump! The Villages lied about many things!

May we assume that despite all that, you like it here enough to stay 24 years??????

Oh, it is a "gated community" , for sure.

Unfortunately, it is NOT a "SECURE, Gated Community"!

I do wish that had been explained before we bought here. I'd think the new Fenney development could be made an actual Secure, Gated Community if no county roads go through it. That would make it very attractive to some of us.

Default Gated

I believe the reason for gates is to protect the carts crossing the streets.

Gated communities (where access is restricted) have a number of issues that must be dealt with such as implementing and paying for security, and establishing a road reserve fund (since the roads will not be maintained by the county). If you are looking for a gated community, it would be best to consider a different community. Having lived in a gated community previously, it was immediately apparent to us that The Villages was not a gated community. There was no attempt made by The Villages realtors to convince us that it was a gated community. I suspect the realtors are content to let people assume that The Villages is a gated community. However, it should be apparent that this is not the case the first time you go through a "gate" and you are not required to provide a community identification card. Caveat emptor. The primary role of "gates" in The Villages is traffic flow control. Presumably, the cameras at the "gates" also provide vehicular information for law enforcement in the event of a crime.
