I live in Pinellas and heard the noise. It woke me about 6:15 but where I live the sound was softer. I thought one of my cats was trapped somewhere at first.

Duck season started today. You might hear shooting as early as 1/2 hour before sunrise. As you described....pop,pop,pop,pop.

According to the on-line news, the sheriff's office investigated reports of shots fired and found 30 to 40 boats out hunting early this morning. Canada Goose hunting season continues until Jan 30, 2015.

I'm in Hillsborough as well - it woke us up at 6. We went outside but could not determine where it was coming from.
