What are we missing?
We had looked forward to already being there for two weeks but our oldest daughter who is single, fell off the icy front steps and badly broke her leg in three places, requiring surgery. She is ensconced here at our house in bed, unable to get out of it until next Monday to visit the doctor to see if she needs more surgery. The ER improperly splinted it and it caused soft tissue damage and they were unable to put all the screws in that they had planned. We are happily taking good care of her.
ANYWAY....It is cold and snowy here, but what is the weather like there??...I know what the temperature says but is it expected to get nicer soon? Have the flowers been frosted? I was able to move back my college course for only a three dollar fee...But tell me what we are missing at Havana and at the squares? Has pickleball been going on?, I know that golf is NEVER stopped for weather in our family. Anyone playing bocce, shuffleboard, going in the heated pool? Walking their cute dogs?, running? bicycling? What are you all doing during the cold weather? I know my posts have been kind of grouchy lately and I hope that you will all forgive me. I hope that people are playing cards and having dinner partys and meeting people for drinks etc. Last edited by graciegirl; 01-05-2010 at 05:50 PM. |

Brrrr!
Hi Gracie Sorry to hear about your daughter. Very cold this AM 28. Golf was delayed due to heavy frost. Baseball tryouts were cancelled due to weather. The squares have been shut down because of cold weather. Havana has been very busy. Crowded over the weekend, JoAnn and I played pickle ball for the first time today. Had to dress very warm but had fun going back Sat. for more. Hope all works out with your daughter. Resteraunts have been very busy also. They're talking about 20 degrees for Sat. Hopefully it will warm up soon. That's about all I can tell you. At least we have NO SNOW.

I'm so sorry about your daughter, Gracie....I hope recovery is quick and complete.
It's cold here, though not as cold as where you are. Just read an article about how people who live in warm climates become adjusted to the heat and when it gets cold, it feel REALLY cold for them. I'm a west coast transplant and the weather we've had this week feels really, really cold. This morning some of the courses didn't start play until 10AM. When one starts talking about wind chill in Florida...lol....and that's been the norm this week....cold temps, wind, and tonight possibly wind chill factors making it feel like it's in the teens. Do you have this link for the town squares? You can see what's going on in Market Square and Spanish Springs... http://www.thevillages.com/lifestyle/cam_lsl.asp You'll have to type in the address, I can't seem to make it an active link. There is no entertainment tonight, too cold. It's in the high 30's right now with a little bit of wind. No entertainment when the temp goes below 47 I believe it is. |

That's a bad break!
Gracie, I hope your daughter's injury heals completely and with as little stress as possible. She is lucky to have you and "Sweetie" there for her. I hope she is not in much pain!
We're back in "hotlanta" now where it's freezing. I know it's all relative, but I think Pooh is right about warmer climate people not acclimating well to freezing temps. Maybe we have Mercury Deficit Disorder. Take care and may it be nice and warm in TV when you're able to get down. |

Oh, Gracie! I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. Icy walks are hazzards for everyone, not just us aging folks. We too are in the frozen tundra this winter so I'm anxious to hear responses to your post. My usual attitude is "love the one you're with" but it is harder this year to love Sybericuse. Hope you have more luck keeping your spirits up.

Very sorry to hear of your daughter's misfortune.
Gracie: we got in a few hours of ice skating on the lake at Sumter Landing today. I could see the alligator under the ice wondering how he got from Florida to Saskatchewan. Those who spent the big bucks to travel to Miami for the BCS bowl will push for next year's game to be in Honolulu..... 81 degrees there today. |

Aw GG, sorry to hear about your daughter's accident. I hope she recovers fully and quickly. I have a similar situation going on here in snowy Syracuse - My Linda (not "another Linda" who is another Syracuse suffragette) and I were in Cancun for Christmas when she tripped by the hotel pool, fracturing her ankle in three places and had surgery in Mexico on Christmas Eve. But her care was surprisingly good, and her U.S. surgeon says the Mexican surgeon's work was "magnificent". So I'm doing nursing duty along with all of the other household tasks she always does so seamlessly (you know, laundry, cooking, cleaning, dishes, etc.) I have a new appreciation for what she normally does for me. I know you were asking about Florida weather, but I need to say that up here in the great white north I've run my snow blower six times over the past five days, and that's quite enough. There is now about three feet of snow on my front lawn. Only twenty-six months to go to retirement and our move to TV!

Oh Gracie! I'm so sorry about your daughter's injury! And Collie, I'm sorry your Linda broke her ankle!
The weather here is COLD and windy! We put beach towels over our new bouganvillas (sp?) and hibiscus bushes. I don't know what else to do for them. The little doves were crouching in a patch of sunshine behind the bushes today. I think they were trying to stay out of the wind. Rocky & the Rollers were supposed to be at LSL tonight, but even the drink shacks were closed. I was surprised that there were so many people downtown in this weather -- especially with no entertainment and no happy hour drinks. They must all be visitors from up north! The weatherfolks say we're having the longest cold snap in a decade. We went to the craft fair at Spanish Springs this weekend. We wore wool coats and mittens, and we huddled inside Starbucks for some warmth and lattes. Most of the 5:00 movies at Spanish Springs were sold out. The Redbox machine at Sweetbay is out of order. Is everybody staying home and watching movies? There weren't many golfers on our golf course today. Mr. Judy even canceled his golf this morning, and that never happens! We're supposed to have another freeze tonight. It's hard to believe that just a few days ago we celebrated New Year's Eve outside on the lanai with the neighbors. That's all the news from my patch of Lake Sumter. GG & Collie, I hope both of your doctors have good news, Judy

Hi Gracie,
Sorry to hear about our daughter's "slip & fall" accident. She probably hates feeling grounded as much as you are wishing her better. The young always seem to heal faster and get back on their feet a lot quicker than us "older folks". Any way, enjoy your time together while it lasts. You both will look back at this some day and say, "gee wiz we got through this much quicker than we thought we would!! Tell your daughter we are all wishing her well soon! Sorry it had to happen. |

I broke my leg in two places about 20 years ago. I know what she is going through and I know what the care givers are going through.
I am so sorry for your problems. |

GG and Collie, here's to wishing full and speedy recoveries to your loved ones!
AJ, you are correct when you say that picture pretty much sums up what TV looks like right now. As far as what we're doing: yesterday we tried to go to the movie "It's Complicated" but, it was sold out. We ended up going out to lunch instead. I am enrolled in three of the interior decorating themed classes at the LLC and have been able to attend two of them. I missed the first one due to a flat tire. Today we are meeting Carl Seigal at our model home so we can discuss plantation shutters. Saturday we are having a neighborhood party at noon for the village of St. Charles. Although, I just heard it was supposed to rain so I'm not sure I will attend. I met another St. Charles newbie last night in an interior decorating class who didn't know about the party. Unfortunately, I mistakenly told her the neighborhood party was on Friday at noon instead of Saturday. I feel really awful that I gave her the wrong day and am hoping to be able to find a way to get in touch with her before Friday. I keep having visions that she is going to show up with her potluck dish and drinks and be standing all by herself. |
