Default What's behind the vinyl?

Are the vinyl siding panels on Villages homes backed by studs only, or by sheathing on studs? If sheathing, anyone know the thickness?
(My house is in Santiago, nearly 20 years old.)
Thanks!

Probably either three quarter inch foam board or felt board. I think foam board is required as part of the insulation package and fiber glass batts between the studs.

I think 1/2" plywood (OSB) was code.
Give it a pound with your fist, it should be solid.
I would hope a house in a hurricane area does not use fiberboard.
My house built in 95, is 1/2" plywood.

OP, you might be able to get info from home warranty. Also they may be able to tell you where you can get your house plans if they are available for a house that old. The last option would be to take a small drill (1/16 inch) and drill test holes in inconspicuous locations. It should be obvious if you hit wood, foam board or other material. You did not state why you need the info, but if you are trying to mount something, the typical stud finders will not work, and you may need to use my drill method, or use stud finder inside the house, take measurements and then measure outside.
Hope this helps.

Typically sheathing on studs with fiberglass insulation. The sheathing being covered by felt paper. Having worked on several homes in your vintage, I have come across that often.

The newer wood frame vinyl houses in The Villages are constructed with 2x4 studs 24" on center, with 15/32 OSB sheathing, and tyvek type house wrap around it. The vinyl siding is nailed on that and hangs off of the nails enough for expansion.

The older homes are mostly done the same way, except that in many cases you will find 15 pound felt used instead of house wrap.

If you look along the bottom row of your vinyl siding, you should see both the sheathing and the wrap. You can also often slide the top row of the siding back and forth enough to also see this.

On a 20 year old house, often you will find places where landscapers have damaged the siding enough that you can also see what you are looking for.

Hope that helps!

Frank

Many thanks for the thoughtful, constructive replies.

(And as to the couple of throw-away comments -- well, that's life in The Villages, too!)

When I first saw this thread title I thought it was going to be "What's the inside behind the scenes story about the album by that band I like."
Sort of like that show that used to be on VH1.
