We frequently see golfers play during lightning storms. We watch them from inside, staying far away from the windows. We also thought the golfers weren't thinking with their full brains, but we see it happen so often that we've come to the conclusion that the golfers must have a terrible disease & are hoping for the quick way out.

We had friends up north whose brother and SIL took cover under a "shelter" on a golf course. There was a bench in it and they were sitting waiting for the rain to let up when they both got hit by lightening and died...leaving a young family. Yes, FL is the lightening capital of the world AND the weather folks count the lightening strikes!!! I've seen those clueless folks here as well.

Okay, speaking only for myself, we have to realize - golfers are not playing with a full deck!

We are either out in the hot sun, rain, wind etc. hitting a little ball around.
Most times we chase this ball from left to right - NEVER in the middle.

After about 4 hours of total frustration, we come home and tell our wives what a great time we had!

Bet this opens a can of posts ! LOL

Thanks!!!! I've been wracking my brain trying to think of the name of that movie! The shot of the minister/priest shaking his club up at the lightning still makes me laugh! Well, he got what he wanted. Thanks for letting me get some sleep tonight!

Lightning facts

On the July afternoon that a lightning strike damaged the Trinity Christian Academy Preschool in Deltona, thunderstorms produced about 600 lightning strikes across Volusia County.

It's not uncommon for a thunderstorm in Florida to have more than 400 lightning strikes in two hours, the National Weather Service said. Here are some facts on lightning:

- Florida leads the nation in lightning strikes with 1.07 million flashes last year. An estimated 25 million lightning flashes occur each year in the nation.

- More than 70 percent of lightning strike victims are male.

- Thunder can be heard up to 10 miles away.

- Of the 20 fatalities in the U.S. this year, 12 happened in July. Of the total, five people had been fishing, three working outside and three playing.

- Lightning will strike the same place twice or many times. The Empire State building is hit nearly 100 times a year.

- Lightning will strike out "of the blue" up to 15 miles away from a thunderstorm.

- When lightning strikes a vehicle, it goes through the metal frame into the ground. Don't lean on doors during a thunderstorm.

- Lightning strike victims are not electrified. It is safe and preferred to administer first aid and CPR as soon as possible.
