I was wondering if any of you are a lot more active than you were before you moved to the Villages.
It looks to me like the area is conducive to bike riding, walking, going to the gym etc. with so much availability. I am thinking I would be more active if I moved there. When we visited we did do a lot more but we were visiting. So I am curious if living in the Villages has made a big impact on your physical lifestyle? |

YES! my goodness, I do more in a week now than I did in months before. In fact, I find I look forward to couch potato time after a busy few days. there's some physical activity that can be done every day at all times. I was on the way to play pickleball last week and it started to rain...so just looked for an activity and voila, zumba was starting at a rec center...off I went. just started Tai Chi last week, do pilates.....there's still so much I want to try.

Couch potato here from Ohio. Never did anything but go to work, sit all day, come home. Now that we are here we are out doing something every day including golf about 3 days a week. Sunny Florida gave us a whole new outlook on life!

YES because I am retired now, out of regular working (and therefor regulated and limited) schedule.

That old saw says what you lose in December you gain in June. In most communities facilities for physical activities are available and so in my view its not where you live but I you choose to live. Think me wrong let's express it another way. if I said by moving to TV I am more active then the reverse would have to be true. If I did not move to TV than I would not be active....and that dog won't hunt. If a person wants to be active irrespective of climate facilities etc they will be active even if it means doing push ups and set ups everyday at home. Its the mindset that counts. and the same principles would apply to social activites

We are definitely more active here in The Villages than back up north in Connecticut. While there is some degree of activity up north maintaining a large home, lawn cutting, etc. that is work. Here it may be the same level of activity, i.e. golf, walking, going to the pool for a swim, joining clubs, it is FUN WORK

Another aspect to all of this is the type of activity and that bears directly on whether a person is working or retired. Experts concur that if a person doesn't desire to visit a gym doing household chores they can gain the same benefits. etc.
some people like to work. I was forced into retirement because of an illness. Ironically i am healthier now than when I retired but it had nothing to do with retiring it had to do with time to heal. I learned and love to work but I never learned or love to play. Cést la vie |

Because of the amount of exercise one gets in the Villages, I would think one would add another 10 to 15 years of healthy living to ones life expectancy. Won't say anymore as I am late for pickleball.

I think so because everyone around you seems to be so active
and energetic. It feels good!

Not sure I will miss the 10 hours a week I spend on the yard.. Up north but I would say that we go to the gym daily plus walk 3 miles a day and still work 40 to 50 hours per week. So I am hoping I will just maintain when we come full time

Just the fact that one has 40 plus hours a week to be active, instead of going to work. Working around the house doesn't count, as you don't get your heart rate up to the required minimum, to get one's heart in conditioning mode.
I go the gym three times a week, will play stickball on Sundays, pickleball and golf, to supplement my gym workout. There are many choices to go dancing and that is a good aerobic exercise. Use it or lose it. If one wants to kid themselves that mall walking and going out to eat is being active, they are kidding themselves. We all need to do pushaways, from the dinner and burn more calories. They are too many activities to stay home, but one must choose to do athletic activities instead of sedentary pursuits, whenever possible. IMHO.

Since moving here 15 months ago, I walk 12 miles a week and play golf 3 times a week (had not played in 25 years). I have lost 15 pounds and lowered my blood sugar. The Villages is totally responsible for my turn around!!!

I am a lot more active.
Since moving here I golf 4-5 times a week , usually walking the course. Never even played golf before. |

an online version of our newspaper. Each Thursday there is a pullout of Recreational News- a listing of all the activities available for residents…. you can view the current rec news online anytime. It will blow you away…. ever tried Dragon Boat Racing? We are much more active in pleasant physical pursuits here- as others have mentioned, one almost has to plan for 'down time'! In addition to recreational activities, there are lots of local volunteer opportunities, many of which will afford both physical exertion as well as mental/spiritual exercise. My husband is in the Color Guard (Marine Corps League) We volunteer at a soup kitchen - for a small example. We are out in the fresh air daily! That, in and of itself is healthy ![]() I think we are in better physical shape than ever, because we have so much to participate in. I take water aerobics and jazz dance, hubby plays golf and paddle tennis…. so far! We were mentally and physically active prior to moving here, but it wasn't as enjoyable. Here, we grin at each other and seize the day! |
