Default Warning for Pet Owners

As some of you know we recently moved into our CYV in Tamarind Grove. Today we had a landscaper remove the Holly tree and plants that were oringinally planted in our courtyard. Holly berries are mildedly to severly toxic to pets. Since our dogs tend to munch on plants occasionally we did not want to risk their exposure to the Holly plants.

Thanks, Newt, I didn't know that about hollyberry plants. Also, be careful about Oleanders they also are very poisonous to animals.

Default plants and pets

I don't want anyone to panic but I am an avid gardener and although not a master gardener I have extensively looked into Florida plants and their toxins. Most ALL Florida plants have some sort of toxins in them. Some are mild and some can be severe to pets. I would suggest goggling the plants, trees and bushes in your individual yard or google poison or toxic Florida plants. Also I have found that when my dog walks on grassy areas being in the neighborhood or along pathways I wipe his feet with a baby wipe after we get home as there is so much chemicals put down on the grasses here. He likes to lick his feet and gets sick if I don't wipe his feet off. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

My dog also has had itchy feet since we got here last Sept. but I don't think it's the chemicals in the lawn. I think it is the reclaimed water in the irrigation systems. It's full of bacteria. My vet said to either use Claritin daily or Benadryl but I find that if I wipe the feet after coming in with a wipe with Aloe and spray with a hydrocortisone spray (bought at Petco, over the counter) when she starts licking her feet, she stops immediately with relief. Vet says I was doing the right thing. I've only used the spray for a week but so far so good.

thanks - that could explain why my dog seems to have gotten ichy skin - I give him Benedryl & that seems to help him sleep at night.

Some "northern" dogs are allergic in the south. I had a Scotty who scratched himself bare, had to have prednisone shots then maintainence drugs to keep from itching. Got so bad we had to give him to friends here in PA. Our friends who winter here in FLorida in a RV have to medicate thier Llaso w prednisone every winter.

Still good on wiping the feet with Aloe wipes (sold by the case at Sam's Club) and only occasionally using the spray. No more licking and never had to go to the Claritin or Benadryl. Thank God, because they were raw looking from her licking.
