It has been a long time since we have ordered meal kits. It looks like there are a lot more companies offering more variety of plans than there used to be.
I am particularly interested in plant-based meals sometimes. We are not vegetarians or vegans, I just prefer to choose and buy our meat and fish myself. I would appreciate any recommendations or reviews from TOTVers' experiences with meal kits delivered to your door, especially plant-based options. Thanks. Boomer

I ordered from Purple Carrot for over a year. They are plant based and had good variety so I always found options I liked… until I got tired of the price. They weren’t significantly more than other services, I just wanted to cut costs so I started making my own meals from recipes I got from them.

We were ordering a weekly food service but after about a year they switched their containers and a few portions would arrive with broken containers. So we stopped ordering from them.
The main problem I think with mail food service is that in the hotter months food can arrive thawed and so would be considered non edible. Depends on the distance that it has to be shipped. |

Plant based kits are outrageous in price, that was being ordered for my parents. I took an hour every two weeks, make everything that hungry root included in that meal kit. Divide into 10 meals, freeze. Separately I grill, bake, or sear, 10 different protein portions (fish, chicken, x3 each beef, pork x2 Freeze. Some meal kits are literally overwhelming to follow prep
So they could choose to have just a plant base, or add any protein. Better quality, and portion control, quick and easy for them. Cost was about 1/4 of the sometimes questionable deliveries. For me an hour of hands on time, visit, take care of stuff and make them healthy food. Grocery was delivered from Kroger, on my time slot, so no shopping. Kroger also does meal kits you can order with grocery, so that is an option. I love convenience for them, but not the quality especially using a plant base.

Thank you all for your informative posts.
I am finished thinking about starting with meal kits again. We used Sunbasket years ago, and I am now reminded of why we stopped. The prep time so often took longer than I thought it would/should — but that’s probably just me. Another reason was the shipments got ahead of us in some weeks when social things popped up to change dinner plans. (We got behind on the kits and then the guilt set in.) Also, now, most of them are looking silly expensive. So? I am now using “Eating Well” where they have endless recipes on their site or page and have them organized according to what works for your own goal of protein, carbs, low calorie, vegetarian, etc. And the ingredient lists are short and easy to find. I found 4 interesting recipes in just a few minutes this morning and will make a grocery list and try them and see which ones are keepers. Boomer

These deliveries are so expensive - I wouldn’t go that route unless I was house-bound and unable to shop for myself - and even then, if i was in that bad of shape, I probably would not want to exert the energy to prep and cook, and would want to be part of “meals on wheels’ instead, where I could just pop a meal in the microwave with little prep involved.
