Florida is 41st? Let's see, I can't be a convicted felon; I can't be or have been insane; I can't have been accused of domestic violence; I must take a weapons class. Not all that difficult to qualify. Actually, it is very easy to get a concealed weapons license in Florida.

BTW, if you are a convicted felon in Florida, you can't carry pepper spray, either.

A list of 30 items in the Florida Preliminary Eligibility Determination for Concealed Weapon or Firearm License. Tho not much more than what you mentioned above.

I was a cop for 32 years and used pepper spray, Mace, and tear gas. Of all of them Pepper Spray is the one I hated the most. 9 times out of ten you get hit with what ever you use. That's why all cops must get sprayed during training. So you know what to do when you use it and get sprayed. I don't recommend you spray yourself, but it will come as a big surprise if you use it and get some on your face.
If you use it try to spray right at a suspects face. Pepper spray does no go on any other parts of the body. Mace is able to vaporize and affects people even on the chest or hair. Try not to spray into the wind. Make sure you know which side of the container has the nozzle. I've seen people use it and get confused and spray themselves or others they did not intend to spray. It has no effect on about 3-5% of the population. Has to do with their tear glands and other issues with their oily skin. About 10-15% of people on drugs or alcohol are only slightly effected and the spray will not stop them at all.
Carry a cell phone, call 911 and try not to get yourself into a situation that allows you to be a victim. As far as carrying a gun . Very dangerous proposition. Many legal and civil problems. I have carried a gun all my adult life. Still if you are not well trained and very efficient with it I don't recommend you carry. Just because you can get a permit to do it does not mean it's a good idea for everyone. Even displaying it at the wrong time can get you arrested, jailed and sued civilly.

Default Kimber Pepper Blaster II

I recommend you look into the Kimber Pepper Blaster II. It is not a spray that you can get on yourself and have to be close to the attacker to use.
It fits in the hand like a small gun and it has 2 shots of that can be fired at an attacker up to 10 - 12 feet away at a speed of 90 miles per hour. It is more potent than spray and can immobilize the attacker for 45 minutes. It is not an aerosol propellent so you will not lose power over time. I am sure if you Google it you can find out all the details you need.

Jimjoe, having been through a dog attack as well, I like your idea about the weed fork. I'm going to get one. For now, I carry citronella dog-deterrent spray and a strong walking stick that is to be jammed into the attacking dog's mouth.

When I was a LOT younger, I was in business for myself and would carry quite a bit of cash with me at times. I would carry pepper spray with me. Well, one night, I was having a few beers at a local bar and this really huge drunk started arguing with me about something and it escalated from there. I sprayed him right in the eyes at close range for a good 2-3 seconds. He wiped it off his face with his hand and it didn't stop hiim at all. I took off running out of that place !

Check out safetygirl.com, a division of Online Stores. Some of the mace/pepper spray containers are disguised as lipstick tubes, cell phones and the like.
