Default censorship

The other night I posted a forward about the health care proposal the government is trying to pass. It was deleted off TOTV because they told me of copy right laws.It really is to bad that we cant post this material on here which is one of the best media for The Villages to atempt to inform people of what is going on in this country if they havent read it or know what is really going on. You basically have hidden the political postings making it a chore for people to read. What are you really afriad of a law suit, probably not. Offend someone maybe but this case we should be offended that we are not paying attention to what is going on. I will probably be denied the right to post after this and lets see how long this post stays up. One last thing to the American people this is your future stand up for your rights dont let them be written off the books.

So, ddoug, your baiting us, right? You want to be banned, right? No chance over this.

Do you want to exercise your right of free speech? Start your own forum, then you can post anything you choose. You could publish other websites in their entirety if you wish. And you yourself would be responsible.

You're not going to post it here if it is copyrighted. It is in our original rules. No copyrighted material. When we see it we remove it.

You can have the members of Talk of The Villages read whatever you like. Just post a link to the material. That is what we require, and some of our most active posters do just that. A short passage for review purposes is generally permitted. Then post the link.

We've said it before, and here it is again. No copyrighted material.

We want original material.

Hi DDoug,

A copyright gives an author of an orginal work exclusive rights to its publication and distribution. It is not a violation of copyright laws to link to a website. It can be a violation to just copy and paste someone else's work without attribution.

If I understand Tony correctly, you could have/still can posted a link to the material you want to share. This would protect the intellectual property rights of the original author/ publisher without violating your 1st Amendment rights.

DDoug -
How about posting your original post and using the link rather than the copy so that we can get back to that discussion?

Not sure what Ddoug posted, but the health care bill is NOT copyrighted.

My guess is that it was some copyrighted material from a paper or mag.

Doug - re-post with a link - I'd like to read it. Thanks.

There was a post on the health care bill a few days ago that was moved or deleted. I'm not sure if it was the one in question here, but the article was from a lawyer.

Just IMO, that one seemed as much a political opinion as an analysis of the bill.

Not knowing what the article was, I agree that linking it is the best direction to go. I also think that if it's political opinion it should be posted in the Political Talk Forum.

DDoug's comment that the Political Forum is hard to access is absolutely wrong. Joining the Political Forum couldn't be easier. I believe that the Administrators have gone out of their way to make it very easy. There is an ad box on each and every page that anyone can click on to begin the simple process.

Nobody here said the healthcare bill is copyrighted. Give us credit for knowing that. We won't be posting that bill in our forum, though. Who has that much computer storage space to carry that baggage? Put a link to it.

Also, to join the Political board, there is a permanent link at the left above the ads in Site Navigation.

I think people may be confusing censorship with Freedom of Speech. Two totally different things.

Freedom of speech is protected in The first amendment. It guarantees that the government will not pass a law forbidding you to speak in a public place.

Censorship comes from the Latin "to give ones opinion." It is a broad based term with many contemporary meanings. One encyclopedia describes it as "
supervision and control of the information and ideas circulated within a society. In modern times, censorship refers to the examination of media including books, periodicals, plays, motion pictures, and television and radio programs for the purpose of altering or suppressing parts thought to be offensive. The offensive material may be considered immoral or obscene, heretical or blasphemous, seditious or treasonable, or injurious to the national security"

Ask yourself this questions. "If I owned a radio or TV station, newspaper or internet forum, would I let everybody say anything they wish to say anytime they want to say it?" Further ask, "would I ever draw a line, where would that line be?" "Dare I allow totally unrestricted speaking of opinion?"
