Default 2 million people

It took 3 months for 1,000,000 people to be infected by Covid19. It took 11 days to go from 1 million to 2 million. Ask yourself, how many more would be infected if social distancing was not enacted. It's too bad that some people (like low-paid Walmart workers and grocery store clerks and first-responders) can't stay home and be safe like the rest of us. But, thank God (or whoever you worship) they're there for us.

ALL religious gatherings. Closures directed only at churches would clearly be illegal.

Essential businesses are not closed which includes small mom and pop grocers, pharmacies, hardware stores, restaurants (carryout or delivery), etc.

Maybe think back to the polio epidemic where similar restrictions took place and thousands of hospital wards filled with floors of children and adults in iron lungs. And if you survived, the horrible treatments, years of physical therapy and possible paralysis. Many people ended up in hospitals for years under quarantine and many spent the rest of their lives in institutions.

I think a few months of closures and social isolation is well worth the contribution to the greater good of our society as a whole. These types of sacrifices were put in place in the past as well.

Default Please put everything in CONTEXT

Why is it now that the death of .006% of the American population from sickness can now shut down the whole country and change how we gather maybe forever??

If we are going react to all these end of the world numbers without understanding that all the models have been way off and that the media never uses % s unless it helps their agenda.

The human race has survived in spite of politicians , wars , weather, and even the plagues. ( read ' Get Well Soon' Jennifer Wright , History's Worst Plagues)

The politicians and the un elected bureaucracy now know that the Constitution and freedom can be ignored and they can control all our lives if less than 1% of the population is in danger and that they will never been held accountable if their predictions are way off .

Good luck Snowflakes and ladies

It appears that southern churches are the ones blowing off the warnings.

Take a minute a look carefully at actual photographs and signs and even cartoons of the similar Pandemic in 1918-1919, a hundred years ago. Even with all of the things we know now, it seems very much the same.

Do they want to expose their families to this awful disease. We need to concur this disease and packing people into a building will only further the assault we are under. Second: Wal-Mart also provides not only food but has a pharmacy inside its' building which makes it an essential business. I have seen much smaller grocery stores still open, because again, they are essential. The stimulus package, when in finally arrives, will get the small business back on their feet. This type of setback happens whenever there is a disaster not just this virus. The real question is: How often do people make it a point to shop at only small retail stores? These small business will also get no interest loans to help get them up and running again. A well run small business if handled properly will have enough backup assets to hold them for a few months just in case. So yes, we do need Wal-Mart stores, Targets and the like. Third: Government doesn't always get it right because there are far to many cooks in the kitchen. Our governor could do a better job in not playing politics and getting what The Villages really needs, a huge testing site for all of our residents to have access to. Being a research site doesn't cut it.
The only piece I disagree with is thinking that TV should have its own huge testing site. Why? We’re no better or any more important than anyone else.

Isn't it great to be able to research and find context even with the libraries closed

Take a deep breath! Ok now italy has a population of around 23 million. The usa 2018 senses was around 350 million. This doesn’t account for legal visitors and illegal visitors so will add another 3 million. Now do the math and tell me who has the highest death rate percentage.
bingo !!!!!!!!!

Snowball, you haven’t lost a son or daughter or spouse or any family member, friend or neighbor yet due to covid19, obviously.

Did you have that much concern when in 2018 850,000 Americans were hospitalized by the flu and 40,000 died

they were family members too

That seems to be your thinking here. If a complete disaster is avoided it’s because people take precautions—not because there was never a dire threat.

Another example that people like you mention is Y2K. No disaster happened because we spent billions upgrading hardware and software to prevent the disaster—not because there was no real threat. People worked long, hard hours to prevent it and when people like you make fun of it, you are belittling their effort.

How about the ozone hole? Many people like you complain that you want your Freon and it was unfair for the government to outlaw its use. We were warned that millions of people would die of skin cancer if the hole expanded to cover the earth. But millions didn’t die. Not because there wasn’t a threat, but because we prevented the ozone hole from expanding by banning Freon.

There are many examples like this. You really do need to quit watching fake “news” programs that tell you the be outraged over things so they can manipulate you into doing things that are not really in your best interest.
Everything has a cost regardless of which choice you make. Your statement about Freon couldn't be more wrong. Tens of millions died in the developing world...from food poisoning when they lost an affordable means of refrigeration.

You really should consider abandoning the "people like you" phrase. It makes it sound like you believe yourself to be superior, when all you really have is a different misunderstanding. Most news is fake news to one degree or another. Six conglomerates own all our major news outlets. We get opinion disguised as news, and we tend to watch the channels that reinforce our beliefs. "We the People" are being herded into a "house divided", and nobody seems to realize it let alone question why.

don't forget about the 500,000 a year that die from malaria because DDT cannot be used

Are you able to discern the number of afflicted and deceased from covid19 even while we are in pretty strict insolation and the country is pretty much shutdown? How does one deduce one is comparing apples to apples with that criteria? Critical thinking is required for a cohesive discussion regarding this matter.
