Jury Duty... Has anyone been selected to serve on a Jury after moving to TV? How does the jury selection process work in Florida? Do they use the voter registration for a list of candidates?

you know I have been wondering that also. I love serving on Jury Duty (especially criminal trials) I've been here 5 yrs and have yet to be called. Served on One major criminal trial in NY and was thrown off the other since I knew every Det on the case and was working for the PD. I thought they found us through registering for our Fla license or to vote, etc.. but so far I haven't gotten a thing and I even tried filling out a form to be called. What I'd give to be put on that Casey anthony trial !! ha

You know, I haven't had a jury call in more than 15 years, neither in NY nor here, despite driver and voting registration. The last one I got was for a grand jury in White Plains NY. 6 weeks !!! and so boring (mostly undercover drug stuff.) I never got to sit on an interesting jury in NY because (1) I was a journalist and (2) my husband was a lawyer and knew all the judges and the DA's.

Another possible source of jurors is the list of licensed drivers, as is done in NY.
Also included are state income tax filers (now there's a gotcha) and those receiving unemployment benefits. Interesting....... Last edited by RichieB; 06-17-2012 at 09:43 AM. |

I've been a registered voter in Florida and held a Florida driver's license for over thirty years and have yet to be called for jury duty. Perhaps one day my number will be called...

Boy, I must be on a "country-wide" list as a sucker for jury duty.
Been on one jury in New York City (back in the 60's) for a federal case. Been called 6 or 7 times in Los Angeles over the 30 years I lived there. Already called and been on a jury in Bushnell since moving here in '08. Actually, I love the process so I'm rather happy they like me. I think here in FL its done by drivers license and/or voter registration.

How do people get picked for jury duty?
State laws require jurors to be selected randomly from a fair cross-section of the county in which they serve. In Broward County, you are randomly selected from a Florida Driver License Database of US citizens who are residents of Broward County and are 18 years of age or older. If you’ve been picked, your name was selected based on the information listed on your driver’s license, identification card, or voter registration. This random selection ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity and obligation to serve on jury duty. Selection of Jurors To be selected as a juror, you must be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid Florida Driver's License or Identification card, and be a resident of Sumter County. Juror names are randomly selected from a list provided by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The names of non-driver Florida (Sumter County) residents who wish to voluntarily submit affidavits offering their names for possible use in compiling jury lists also may be included. Juror Pay The State Court Administrators Office is responsible for Juror compensation and advances quarterly the funds to pay jurors and witnesses. Jurors who are regularly employed and who continue to receive wages while serving as a juror are not entitled to receive compensation from the state for the first three days of juror service. Jurors who are not regularly employed or who do not continue to receive regular wages while serving as a juror are entitled to receive $15 per day for the first three days of juror service. Each juror who serves more than three days is entitled to be paid by the state for the fourth day of service and each day thereafter at the rate of $30 per day of service. Jurors are not entitled to additional reimbursement by the state for travel or other out-of-pocket expenses. A juror who receives unemployment benefits does not lose such benefits because he receives compensation for juror service. The sheriff, when required by order of the court, shall provide juries with meals and lodging, the expense to be taxed against and paid by the state. Length of Service The first day of service is normally limited to jury selection for trials to be held during that trial week. Jurors selected to serve will be required to return on the date(s) of that trial. In Sumter County the Judge's try to select all jurors on the first day and the remaining jurors are excused for the term. More info at; Jury Duty - Courts - Sumter County Clerk of the Courts |

You can also wind up on a Federal Jury. The Federal Circuit that covers the Villages includes Marion, Sumter and Lake Counties. You have to go to Ocala to see if you get picked to serve on the jury from the jury pool.
It sounded like they go from driver's licenses for the Federal jury pool but some other sources could also be involved like tax records as well as voter's registration. I went for Federal Jury Service about a year ago in Ocala after filling out the forms for Federal Juror Service almost 4 years before getting a notice for possible service. |

Back in Mass. a few years ago I was called for jury duty. They gathered us in a waiting room before selection began and an officer came up to the podium to give some initial instruction. He then said:
“If any of you are holding a letter from your boss requesting that you be relieved from serving because you are so valuable to the operation of the company that they cannot be without you for a single day, please put it back in your pocket but don’t throw it away. When your next annual review comes up, you can hand it back to him as a reminder.” |

Beween my husband and me, we have been called 5 times since moving to Florida 27 years ago. In the past, if you are over 70 years old, you could request to be passed over. It was your choice to appear or not.
