When I was growing up in Texas in the 40's and 50's, that's how they were identified. Nothing anymore derogatory than other descriptors for them or us.

People cannot pick and choose the parts of history they like. History is just what it says it is....history. That was common language back then and as such just cannot be erased. Slavery was a way of life and that is a fact and part of history that cannot be undone or pretend that it never existed.

There was a time when women could not vote, could not sit at a bar (CT changed that one in the 70's), and on goes the list. African-Americans could not play Augusta. Just because they can now does not alter the fact that change had to occur. So it is with language and I believe Deen when she says that she no longer uses it and finds it no longer acceptable because of change.

As for all the PC crapola, please don't tell me that I can no longer say "Merry Christmas" because someone "might" be offended. I am offended when people put down my religion. I have that right; just not the right to force my way onto others because I like it and they don't. If they don't want to say it, but instead say "Happy Holidays", then that is their CHOICE and I would never tell them that they can't because it is or is not politically correct.

Not the most eloquent poster on here, but I hope I got my message across, anyway.
Always makes one feel good when reading what most people think like.

I don’t remember any rioting when OJ Simpson dispatched two white people when the Jury found him not guilty. They didn't find him innocent, but rather not guilty based on the law. It's the same with the Zimmerman verdict... only somehow; many seem to justify the civil disorder generated by the Jury's verdict as an appropriate reaction... In my opinion, main-street media, race-baiters and left-leaning special interest groups are wrongly influencing an already agitated element of our society, promoting division, rather than accord between the races. Time for my meds…

Graciegirl, it's too bad TOTV forum doesn't a "thumbs up" or a "like" button a la Facebook. I'd sure click on it a lot when reading what you have to say.

I use also a Bulletin Board in SOMD, same format as Talk of the Villages, but there is a Like. Should be little problem to add it here.

Sorry dilly meant only to cut one line from your post , the one about history

Anyway there is an old communist saying "you can never predict the past". I believe it has application here because w have made great progress as a country on the issue of race since the Civil Rights Act 1964

Also there are always going to be people who narrowly view issues. Is a person being condescending or is that you have low self esteem? Communication is a bear and s a society we are getting worse at it every day. In part because of the technological way we communicate( wherein body language is absent and represents better than 50% of communication) in part because we don't listen more attentively and in part because we are become too reactionary (shades of reality TV).
