National Library Week
It is National Library Week from the 13th to the 19th of April, 2008. http://www.ala.org/ala/pio/natlibraryweek/nlw.cfm
Remember to use your favorite local library. Mine is Lady Lake Public Library because the people are so friendly and it only took a few days for me to get a link there for survivors of crimes to the FL Victim Services Directory. http://myfloridalegal.com/directory http://www.lakeline.lib.fl.us/intern...oryCategory=24 Plus, the Lake County Library System has a very wide range of DVDs, videos, puzzles, and the like for you to check out. Liked some of the Tampa Bay area libraries to because of how nice the staff was and how quick they put a link to the FL Victim Services Directory http://www.tblc.org/tarpon/law.html like with Tarpon Springs Public Library. Still hope TOTVers will help with making sure that Floridians who might be affected by crime in some way have ready access to the FL Victim Services Directory. The more people who make these suggestions the quicker they will get them like for Sumter http://sumtercountyfl.gov/libraries/index.htm and Marion Counties Library systems http://www.marioncountyfl.org/library/li_home.htm . And for those who travel to Orange County frequently, the Orange County Library system as well. http://www.ocls.info/Virtual/NetLink...esID=12&bhcp=1 And for the snowbirds and snowflakes, check and see if your home away from TV's library has a link to your home state or province's version of the Victim Service Directory. I have bugged librarians in every US state as well as many Canadian provinces to add practical resources for survivors of crimes into their library systems. I have even done this is various foreign countries as well. |

Re: National Library Week
I have known a lot of librarians I would like to hug. Palm Harbor Library and East Lake Community Library -- both in Palm Harbor-- had some of the nicest people I have met except for the upper management whose ethics leave a lot to be desired. I volunteered at these two Palm Harbor Libraries for 1400 hours from 2000 to 2003.
Did not much liked the Palm Harbor Library Director Gene Coppola's lying about there being a link to the FL Victim Services Directory from Palm Harbor Library so I quit volunteering in 2003. Palm Harbor Library did put a link for this FL Victim Services Directory http://www.palmharborlibrary.org/links/florida.htm finally around March 15, 2004 after I got a lawsuit and blacklist from volunteering threat dated March 2, 2004 from the Palm Harbor Library General Counsel for all the pestering I did about this link. I was rather persistent I will admit. East Lake CL got one around June 15, 2004 to something close to this Directory http://www.eastlakelibrary.org/ELCL/links.htm. Some of the people at Minneapolis Public Library and Englewood Public Library (CO) where I also worked were very nice. Law librarians are another species IMHO though as they are often lawyers who have given up on lawyering and become law librarians. Lack of access and governing seemed to me more important in law librarianship. |

It is extremely frustrating to put so much into something and not see that much of an impact. I have got a lot of lip service from politicians, some academics, some victim assistance groups, some association leaders, etc. but have not seen all that much in the form of efforts from librarians and others to reach out to victim assistance providers and make libraries and integral part of the victims of crimes healing process. |
