It was not busy and no need to cut corners. C’mon - common sense folks. Don’t parallel drive around roundabouts!!!

Sometimes, if I meet someone whose ink is especially eye-catching and if the opportunity presents itself, I say, “May I ask about the story of your ink?” (Never has anyone I have asked taken that question as an insult. They always share the story and I thank them for telling me.)

I don’t have any tattoos. The next generation of women in our family have a few, all of them have stories. But their ink does not draw attention. All of these women are in successful careers and probably thought carefully about where and how much to ink……

I think it was wise of them to keep their tattoos small and subtle, and maybe not showing at all, although now tattoos are commonly seen on women…….

But that’s just silver-haired me thinking it’s smart for women competing in the world of careers to not have tattoos announcing their presence and possibly drawing attention from their brains. (And don’t get me started on cleavage.) Of course, I am a dinosaur from the generation of women who read that book Dress for Success.

Speaking of being a dinosaur — and now, I am silver-haired (grew it out during Covid and I love it) — I have since found that I now have a silver-haired bad angel who wants me to say what I am thinking because the hair with an accompanying smile can get me by with more…..

When I meet young people who are covered with tattoos, that had to have cost them a fortune, my silver-haired bad angel wants me to say, “Listen sweetie, have you started a Roth IRA?”

Some (few, imho) actually seem like art, but most seem like low grade graffiti to me. I understand the significance of various tribal symbols, but don't necessarily find them attractive. I think that there are a lot of folks with tattoos who think it is cool, but will regret getting them as time goes by.
If you really want to show how tough your are, or how committed you are and see the result before it is on/in your skin, forget the tattoo and get branded. Now that is body art.

No, you're not alone. I too really try to not get involved in what other people do to decorate themselves; feel perhaps rings and dangles from ears for one person is just a preference and perception of "beauty", or "adornment", while others see rings in noses, eyebrows, etc. more beautifying. I do sometimes think about past practices of other cultures, first to mind is the crippling of young women in ancient China so that they lost their toes and could only walk in a kind of "hobble" which was thought to be regal and most beautiful. But having said all that, I have a VERY difficult moments with facial tattoos that engulf the entire face except for the eyes, and just recently was on vacation in south Florida where the neck tattoo of our (male) server was so disturbing I don't know if I can even describe it. A large skeleton looking full face, with hollow eyes and a very large mouth and tongue sticking out right in the middle of the "Adam's apple". I usually can get past such things, but in a restaurant, preparing to eat, and against my will, I was so repulsed it was "touch and go" about if I was going to be able to eat my meal. I realized there is no way to "complain" about this because to most people, this is no different than a waiter with tongue piercing that "clicks" on the teeth when talking, or a waitress who has a number of piercings in addition to ears. But this particular experience, just a couple months ago, was very difficult for me. There was no way to NOT see it, and it was very gruesome. If the restaurant we were in were here, I have to admit, as much as this will come off as judgmental, I would avoid going when that particular waiter was working. BTW, the restaurant was very "upscale" and popular, but definitely the population in the South Beach area is much more open minded, and also younger, than the average here in the V's. Most probably could not have described this very gruesome (I did NOT describe the detail on purpose) sight if you had asked them as they left the restaurant I suspect. Even NOW I wish I had not seen it.

Actually YES, it will (being serious, not snarky). Yesterday I just happened to catch a news clip, don't even remember the state, think Penn but not sure. But what caught my eye and ears was a chief of police, who IN ALL SERIOUSNESS as he responded to reporters questions about such blatant, daylight, violent crime, said "yes, it's a very serious situation that expands daily. That does make me nervous but, what really "turns my crank" are those who can't stay in their own lane and cut across in front of others forcing them to slam on the brakes or get hit. THESE are the folks who usually seem to be driving around 45-55 mph just before the round-a-bout... straight line drivers with no ability to turn.

I had a college friend who became a doctor but opened a sideline business removing tattoos by laser. He made much more money doing that than as the head of a large ER practice in Arizona. Frankly, I’ve never seen a tattoo as attractive as the skin underneath it was, and that “little flower on my ankle” never looks as nice as even the worst painting of a flower. To me, a tattoo on the neck or face instantly signals that the person bearing it has given up on life and expects to die of an overdose or gunshot or spend life in prison. Sorry, but that’s how it seems to me. Complete turn-off.

You mentioned servers with tatts, so thought I’d chime in because I’ve noticed that it’s a real thing for pro chefs! Watch the Food Network a lot and at first, I was taken aback by people cooking food with all those tatts! Nowadays I’ve accepted it, no big deal. Except, tatts on hands and fingers, when you’re cooking, dunno about that. Anyway you mentioned neck tatts and, I’m just thinking, isn’t that painful to get those?

The difference between going bald or being ugly versus tats is that baldness and ugliness just happens, people who get tats choose to do it and a great many of them are pretty ugly. I do not care what people do but the neck, face and head tats seem to indicate prison fare

I’m full of tattoos and my kids, forgetaboutit, they have a fortune invested in ink. I think it looks great. No face, hand, or neck tats on any of us!
