If as reported on 5/4/2020 there were 226 cases of the virus in Sumter County and the
Prison has 89 does that mean the number of Residents (non Prison) are at 137? Just asking?? ![]() |

Just to remind all of us again as to where the most illness and fatalities have been in this country is in NYC. Where people do live closer than people do here. And they use the subway systems. I read where they will spray the subway system...How often? Every ten minutes? The way we are addressing this is almost silly at times. Do most people think, so what, I'll take my chances? So what, I don't know them. So what they live far away? So what they are in a nursing home, they are ready to die anyway? Read this just posted on my computer news feed from CNN. (Remember I have a list of news sources I think are valid for hard facts and they are not always the one I accept for opinions.) A disclaimer.

I guess there are multiple reasons for the number of Virus's in New York City, I believe the residents are living real close to each other, there are a number who have to work and be close, the subways are a definite factor, the profile of the people regarding attitudes, the ability to control certain residents with "rules', etc. I worked in lower Manhattan for many years and am not at all surprised at the level of infected.

We have 644 cases in Lake, Sumter and Marion counties. So if 89 of those are due to inmates, that means the infection rate for the general population is around 6 per 100,000 in the counties where The Villages has a presence. Probably less than that if you back out nursing homes and assisted living, then the gen pop rate is doing darned pretty good....

Yes, roughly 40% of the cases in Sumter are currently from the correctional system.

Since most of the prisoners are young men they are very unlikely to die or become seriously ill from Covid-19, but the staff can spread it to the vulnerable population, especially in Bushnell.

I do worry a lot about the staff and their families, many are former military, LEO, first responders. They have extreamly high stress jobs without this risk. |

Prisons represent the ultimate "Shelter in Place". Staff can force masks and proper hygiene. Elsewhere far too many humans that are left to their own devices, ignore precautions.

Merle Haggard was a former prisoner. Thank goodness that wonderful voice wasn’t stilled by Covid19. Many people released from prison go on to live good, hardworking lives. Last edited by Aces4; 05-04-2020 at 11:34 AM. |
