I am in charge of getting one of my best friend's a retirement gift. My ideas have been the Kindle or cash. I know she doesn't need any luggage, watch, picture frames, camera, etc. Anyone have a good idea or receive something they treasure. I would like to purchase something even if it is nominal and then give her the rest in cash we collected. suggestions are most welcome and would love to hear what you received when you retired. Did anyone receive a video where individuals talked or a book with memories written in it?

The best thing I rec'd when I retired was a picture of our 10-story office building seen in the rear view mirror of a car.

Conn, my honey received some nice gifts, but his favorites were:

* Framed and nicely matted "Natif D'acadiana" big picture of a crawfish with a little brass plaque at the bottom. (Don't know if I spelled that right. It means Native Cajun)
* Framed and nicely matted (I love good matting!) big montage of 37 years of the company's product. He worked there for 37 years.
* Framed and widely matted picture of his building with signatures and good wishes written directly on the mat

Of all the gifts he received, the pictures are the ones he treasures most.

I was given a party, a number of gifts and cash, but the nicest gift was my first retirement check.

I was given a rocking chair with a name plate on the back of the chair with my name, the companies name and my years of service. Very nice chair!

I got a catalog to choose from, mostly stuff I'd never want.
Due to lack of anything better, I chose a Tiffany vase - only thing from Tiffany's that I'd ever own. Anyway, Mrs JohnN loves it, and it is really beautiful. She's got some birds of paradise flowers in it and looks very tropical.

I'm more like k2at and Muncle, just saying adios after 30 years was enough for me - pension in hand. I enjoyed my work but it was time to go.

I'm a sports oriented person, and received a gift certificate from a sporting goods store, as well as restaurant gift certificates, which we really enjoyed.

I was self-employed for 31 years, best retirement gift is a monthly check from my SEPP, the gift that hopefully keeps on giving!!

On the other hand . . . . . .

My wife retired from 38 years of teaching elementary level children. Her fellow educators had her retirement party at one of the local country clubs attended by 150+ colleagues and friends. It was a grand and glorious affair with lots of recalled memories, former students testimonials, gifts, skits and humorous songs. There is nothing like a teacher retirement party!!

We like to cruise and one of my gifts was an assortment of Cruise specific items for a trip we had pre planned as a retirement cruise ...1)Dinner for 2 at a speciality resturant, 2) Casino Chips, 3)A wine Package for dinner during the cruise...Again this may not be for all people, but my wife and I definitely enjoyed thinking about the office group while on our cruise and It was much better FOR ME than a typical gift one might receive.

I got a nice 8 day wall clock that I get to wind every Saturday. But it does bong out the quarter hour and full hour - on time I might add.

I picked it out of a catalog of even more useless gifts.

After 40 some-odd years in the cosmetics industry, my wonderful staff gave me a beautiful oil painting of the 3 schnauzers (sitting still which is amazing), and a retirement party in Marina del Rey, CA in one of my favorite Italian restaurants over looking the beautiful marina, with about 100 people some who flew in from other locations just to be there. It was truly an amazing and gratifying farewell.

After that, I'm sure my staff all had a party celebrating my departure, sheee''ssss gonnnnneeeee! ♫♫♫

A Mac laptop and a terrific Tommy Bahama golf bag, all presented at a party that wasn't expected. It was a terrific day and evening.

At my husband's retirement party there were his co-workers getting up and telling stories about fun times they remembered while working with him. That touched him more than the gift certificate they gave him.

My retirement gift was an OMEGA WATCH. It was very beautiful and I showed it to everyone I knew .........One of my friends noticed that it didn't say omega at all, If you look close , it says ONEGA ,,,and all the gold has rubbed off.........I knew they never like me anyway,,,,,,,

truthfully , I received a ROLEX...and no you can't come over and see it ...Its not prefect though...It has Fred engraved on the back , and my names not Fred ?????
