We were young as grand parents, so I didn't want to sound old.

My 3 year old granddaughter calls my husband papa and calls me gannie. She couldn't pronounce the "gr" sound when she was little and started saying gannie. I loved it and it stuck. She calls her other grandmothers nana and mom mom.

I loved this thread. The answers are fun to read.

Interesting thread. When we were growing up once my sister and I were able to produce the right sounds we were taught by my parents that only grandma & grandpa or grandmother & grandfather were acceptable. So those were the only choices. We have 3 grown sons two of which are married, but we have no grandchildren so that has not been an issue yet.

I am not the actual father of "our" sons although I have been the prevalent father figure for most of their lives. They call me by my first name which I am OK with, (and encouraged) although it horrifies my mother to hear them do that. My wife's mother & dad are less formal than my mother is so it's not a big deal for them.

Perhaps someone referred to you (behind your back but within earshot of the grandchildren) as an OLD GOAT???!!!

My first grandchild (we have 5 and counting) could not say my name so she dubbed me Gigi and she named my husband Poppi Bear (the other grandpa is Poppi) it stuck cause my husband has been known to growl (be grumpy) at times like a bear so I didn't let that one be put to sleep .

My kids called me Dad and my second wife (their step-mother) Di (short for Diane). So we are Dad and Di to them.

Our grand kids call us Grand Dad and Grand Di. It works for us...
