We're just getting started on summer. From mid May till July 4, the day we officially moved from West MI, it was 60s and mostly raining. One of Lake Michigan's crappier summers. You never know what it's going to be like there.

I'm loving this heat and humidity. Bring it on.

MOUNT MANSFIELD is Vermont’s highest altitude at 4393 feet above sea level. So, your area , at 4,848 feet is higher than Vermont's highest elevation.

The highest I’ve been is to Winter Park, Colorado........9,000 ft. (dizzying) and Tabernash, Colorado....8,333 ft. above sea level , slightly less dizzying.



Just drink a lot of water and acclimate a few days in Boulder or Denver before going up. Everyone starts out with heart palpitations, etc. but eventually your body makes more red blood cells.......and by the time you are going "down" again you've pretty much acclimated.

Denver really is exactly one mile high. In fact, there is a step on the State Capitol Building that is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level - one mile high. Which step? Well, the 11th step is carved in stone as a mile high, but in 1969, it was found that the actual spot was 4 steps higher. In 2002, it was discovered that Denver is 3 feet higher than previously thought. So take your pick of steps - but one of them is assuredly one mile high.

Boulder is located at the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 5,430 feet (1,655 m). The city is 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Denver.

My son in law’s sister and her husband retired to a farm in West Virginia..........kind of “live off the land” deal....they love it there.

Made it to the Georgia mountains yesterday - it was beautiful. Last night a HUGE storm came in and it has been raining cats and dogs. Flood advisory all around and we are being told to stay off the roads - the good news is it is cooler!!!

Glad the monsoon rains and humidity from the past two days are over and there will be NO FOG crossing the mountains to head east to the coast.

Our daughter and her kids are driving from northern Vermont also, early.
The children are so excited. Her husband and older teen will join us mid week. Our son and his wife and two babies are flying in later this evening to Manchester, New Hampshire.........it will be a great family reunion on the beach in a beautiful two story home with lots of bedrooms, lots of bathrooms, and lots of STUFF we are all bringing (except the ones flying in from Colorado as they have baby gear in tow)..........

I keep looking ahead at the weather and after today with a high of 80, the temps will stay about low or mid 70's with sunshine......the "boys" are all planning to treat "dad" to several deep sea fishing excursions on the Atlantic Ocean...........lots of beach time for the kidlets.......and older cousins getting to spoil baby cousins.

We do this reunion every summer in Vermont......but this year it's Maine.
We will also be saying "goodbye" to Maine, which was our original retirement location of choice........as once we move to Florida, we may not get back there as often........so a bit nostalgic as well as happy trip.

They all promise to visit us for all the holidays in Florida......so what more can we ask?

There will be eleven of us , and no doubt some of their Boston and Maniac friends from college days, will visit a day or two at the beach.

***When we stay in a hotel or motel, no need to bring anything but the clothes, but this time we have beach stuff for the kids, fishing poles, KITES, sand spikes for surf fishing......beach blankets, chairs, etc. and tons of groceries. Even though we plan to treat them out to at least a half dozen lunches and brunches........with children, it sometimes is easier to eat mostly at home......and there is a grill......so bringing lots of meat in the cooler...........ribs, burgers, hot dogs, etc.

Sounds like you are going to have a great time, SC! I remember beach vacations on the Jerey shore when we were kids. There's nothing like the freedom of the beach for kids--we didn't even realize we were being watched like hawks by the parents.

It's several degrees cooler on the beaches of Florida than TV during the hot summer days. Two hours over to New Smyrna and you can tailgate for the day or enjoy a restaurant meal and two hours back to TV. Nice!

We tried a NJ beach vacation while two of the three were still in college. We rented a condo on the Wildwood boardwalk in August, expecting it to be great beach weather. We were wrong. We got pounded with remnants of a hurricane and never saw temps over 70 until the last day right before we left.

We have had the same experience in the FL Keys. Not a hurricane, but horrendous wind and very cold. It's always a crap shoot when you pick a date and rent a place. Some years the dragon wins.
